  • Wright in Kind Gesture

    Wright in Kind Gesture

KYLE Newman has been named in Sunday’s British Semi-Final at Newcastle – thanks to a kind hearted gesture from Charles Wright.

Newman, who is set to return from injury ahead of schedule, was overlooked for the meetings because he was expected to remain on the sidelines.

Now Wright, who has a busy schedule with both Somerset in the Premiership and Redcar in the Championship, has handed his place back for Newman to replace him.

British Speedway vice-chairman Rob Godfrey said: “When Charles became aware of Kyle’s situation, he called us to offer him his place.

“Kyle is keen to do it but obviously we overlooked him initially because we were told he was still likely to be out injured.

“Charles said he believes Kyle can offer more to the meeting because he’s so busy with two clubs and wants to focus on those meetings, which is a tremendous gesture on his part.

“Kyle was delighted when he was told and with Newcastle being his former home track I’m sure he’ll be keen to make it through to the British Final on June 19 at Belle Vue which will be shown live on BT Sport.”

  • Bears put up brave fight at Edinburgh

Bears put up brave fight at Edinburgh

The S.G.Petch Bears battled hard at Edinburgh last night but with mechanical gremlins besetting Ben Barker and already missing Charles Wright it was just too much to overcome despite a great performance from guest Richie Worrell. Richie weighed in with 13 ( plus a bonus) and was well backed by Jonas Andersen and Coty Garcia but with other struggling with the tight track the possibility of a match bonus point just slipped away after a heat 14 5-1 to the Monarchs. The final score was 52-40 to the Monarchs.

With Jason Garrity and Charles Wright returning to the side the Bears go to Ipswich tonight determined to get something from the fixture. Jack Parkinson-Blackburn covers for the absent Ellis Perks.

    Worrall 13&1 Garcia 7 Andersen 12 Barker 3 Hall 1 Perks 4&1 Dale Lamb ( no.8 ) did not ride.

  • Bears maintain 100% league record!

    Bears maintain 100% league record!

Redcar SG Petch Bears made it 2 wins from 2, with an excellent all round team performance to beat the Ipswich Witches 54-35 on Thursday night at the Media Prima Arena.
Every single Bear registered at least a paid win, but the night was marred with an injury to Ipswich rider Nico Covatti in heat 12. Covatti and his team mate Danyon Hume came together going into the third bend, with Covatti coming off worse and receiving lengthy on track treatment before being transferred to hospital. Our best wishes for a swift recovery go to him.

The meeting started off badly for the Bears, with the Witches securing a 5-1 but it was the only time Ipswich led as 2 quick 5-1s for the Bears gave them the lead they never relinquished. Jason Garrity and Ben Barker top scored for the Bears, and handed the Bears two big 5-1s in heats 13 and 15 to secure. Charles Wright and Jonas B Andersen had strong nights as well, and Coty Garcia had his best night as a Bear and recorded a great heat win along the way.

For the Witches, Rory Schlein top scored with Nico Covatti having a good night before his injury.

Bears promoter Kevin Keay was understandably delighted with the result:

A very good result against a much fancied team. We dug deep and we had the bonus of Coty Garcia chipping in with some great points. Good team performance all round cheered on by a good crowd. I’m a happy promoter!

The Bears have a busy weekend ahead, with a trip to Edinburgh tomorrow night before the long trip down to Ipswich on Saturday.

REDCAR 54: Jason Garrity 12, Ben Barker 10+3, Charles Wright 9+2, Jonas B Andersen 9, Fernando Garcia 5+1, Ellis Perks 5, Richard Hall 4+2
IPSWICH 35: Rory Schlein 10, Nico Covatti 9, Danny King 6, James Sarjeant 5+2, Danyon Hume 3, Cameron Heeps 1, Connor Mountain 1
