Unfortunately the overnight rain has been the last straw and the track is now waterlogged, with more rain forecast today there is no chance of preparing a safe racetrack so we have had to make the tough decision to postpone today’s match against Glasgow.

Redcar boss Gavin Parr has challenged his “Agilia” Bears side to repeat the performance they produced against Glasgow in the KO Cup when the Bears host the Tigers in Cab Direct Championship action tomorrow with tapes up at 7:30pm at the ECCO Arena. 

Parr, who is in his debut year as team boss said, “ It would be nice to repeat our last performance against Glasgow (a 53-37 home win). I think our boys are a little bit wounded from our performance against Berwick, especially in the first half a dozen heats, so I’m hoping we can put that performance in the past now.”

Parr is also fully aware of the quality of the opposition, the Glasgow Tigers who defeated Poole on home soil last Sunday, “ We know how good Glasgow are as a team, they have some quality riders but I think our boys are well up for repeating the performance from the cup match.”

Parr was pleasantly surprised with Luke Harrison’s performance against Oxford with the 16 year old picking up 5 points and the man of the match award, “ I was surprised by Luke’s 5 points but let’s not get carried away! We have to remember that Luke is at the start of what looks like a very promising career but he’s going to keep his feet on the ground. There will be races where Luke is just learning his trade so we can’t expect him to pop out and win heat 2 every week, although that would be amazing!”

Parr also warned of the threats of the Glasgow heat leaders with the Tigers boasting a potent top 3 of Chris Harris, Ben Basso and Tom Brennan, “ Harris is a threat wherever he goes and I don’t expect him to score 5 like last time and he’s usually good for double figures! Brennan is riding the crest of a wave at the moment after helping team GB to a silver medal at the World Cup. Additionally, everyone knows how good Basso is around our place, he rides the ECCO Arena really well so he will be someone to keep an eye on.”

Despite the Tiger’s strengths, Parr is confident the Bears have what it takes to get the job done, “ We are capable of getting the home win, we have the resources and the riders to do what it takes to get the win.”

With the second half of the Cab Direct Championship now in full swing, tomorrow’s match presents another aggregate bonus point opportunity with the Bears tasked with hauling back a 14 point deficit after Redcar’s 52-38 defeat at Ashfield earlier this season. 

With the new averages coming into effect this month, Charles Wright takes over the number 1 race jacket with Danny King moving to number 5. Luke Harrison continues to deputise for Jake Mulford with the rest of the Bears lineup unchanged from the defeat at Berwick.

The visitors have named a full strength lineup with Marcin Nowak making his second appearance at the ECCO Arena whilst Ace Pijper will be looking to replicate his performance from last year’s Teesside Silver Helmet when he scored a superb 9 points from 5 races.

After waiting an incredible 1,876 days, Berwick finally defeated Redcar 46-44 in a drama-filled encounter at Shielfield Park. The victorious Bandits were led superbly by their skipper, Leon Flint who hit 12 whilst Charles Wright top scored for Redcar with 12+1. In truth, it was a meeting of two halves as the Bandits controlled the early stages until Redcar bit back late on and almost made a jaw dropping comeback. 

Berwick started off in the best possible manner with an opening heat 5-1 as their fast starting guest, Richie Worrall won comfortably and with Jonas Knudsen holding off Danny King for second, Berwick’s evening could not have begun any better. The spirited hosts then extended their early advantage to 6 points with a heat two 4-2 as Connor Coles won despite strong pressure from Jason Edwards, and with Berwick’s guest, Luke Killeen in 3rd, the Berwick supporters were in dreamland. 

Redcar registered their first heat winner in heat 3 as Erik Riss won but with Connor Bailey at the back, Berwick’s lead remained at 6. Berwick extended their lead to 8 points in heat 4 as Justin Sedgmen made the all important gate for the Bandits and despite Wright’s best efforts, he could not hunt down the Berwick guest and with Coles 3rd, Berwick had the start they wanted. 

Heat 5 saw further trouble for the Bears as the Bandits extended their advantage to 12 points with a 5-1, courtesy of their engine room partnership of Leon Flint & Jye Etheridge. Redcar finally stemmed the tide and struck their first heat advantage in heat 6 as Edwards gated and rode a superb race to hold off Richie Worrall and with Knudsen at the back, the large travelling contingent had a heat advantage to cheer. 

After Sedgmen made it back to back wins in heat 7, the Bandits once again extended their lead to 12 points in a heat 8 4-2 as Knudsen won but Hume limited the damage for Redcar as he passed Coles to ensure the Bears did not concede a maximum. 

After a brace of shared heats won by Wright and Worrall respectively, Gavin Parr played his tactical substitute card in the shape of Wright who joined King in heat 11. The switch paid dividends as the Bears duo gated and secured a relatively comfortable 5-1 to haul the “Agilia” Bears within 8 of the Bandits. 

Heat 12 saw huge drama but most of the drama came after the chequered flag! Edwards gated but out of the 2nd bend, Bailey was at the back. However, the U21 British Champion passed Coles towards the end of lap 1 but despite Bailey’s best efforts, he could not find a way past Etheridge but the Bears did have a 4-2. 

To the surprise of most, the on track action was not done as Etheridge and Bailey exchanged words after the race which culminated in a melee just before the pits gate. Both riders were eventually separated by their respective teams. 

With the meeting still in the balance, the eyes focused back on track as the Bears dragged themselves within two of the tenacious Bandits with a superb heat 13 5-1. However, Berwick hit back with an important heat 14 4-2 as Flint won and with Coles doing well to hold off Edwards, Berwick edged closer to a long awaited win. 

Heat 15 saw Flint gate until the Bandits skipper was passed by King on lap 3 with Wright stretching every sinew to pass Flint and going into bend 3 lap 4, we had a Bandits win & a super heat still a possibility! However, with Flint having the all important outside line, Wright had to attempt a cut back but unfortunately for the Bears, it wasn’t enough and Berwick took the spoils and 2 league points. 

Nevertheless, it wasn’t all bad news for the Bears as they secured the aggregate bonus point 101-79 on aggregate.

Redcar co-promoter, Jamie Swales knows tonight’s Cab Direct Championship clash against Berwick will be a tough fight despite the Bears being undefeated at Shielfield Park since 2019. The “Agilia” Bears, fresh from their superb win against Oxford travel north to take on the Bandits with tapes up at 7pm. 

With the Bears in superb form, many may see the visitors as strong favourites but Swales knows it will be far from simple for his side, “ We don’t ever go to Berwick thinking it will be an easy match, Berwick have quite a unique track, there isn’t many in the league of that size these days! If you don’t turn up with the attitude that it will be a battle then you have already been beaten.”

Swales still has ambitions of finishing at the top of the table, despite the Bears currently sitting 5th, “ It’s going to be hard but we do still aim to top the table and beating the league leaders tonight helps our cause! There is no difference between finishing 2nd and 6th so we still have to aim for the top position as the team who finishes top gets to choose their 2 opponents in their mini play-off group. Nevertheless, as long as we finish in the top 6, we are mainly focused on hitting form come the play-offs.”

The enthusiastic Swales has also reinstated his strong belief in Erik Riss who had a rare off night against the Cheetahs with paid 4, “ Erik is going to one of his favourite tracks (Berwick) tonight and he always goes well at Berwick. Last night, it was tough for him as the track was very different to last week which didn’t help him with his bike set-up. Hopefully, tonight we will see the best of Erik as Berwick’s track preparation is usually the same week in week out which means he should have the set-up from the start.”

Berwick are besieged with injuries ahead of the meeting with the hosts forced to draft in 3 guests. Richie Worrall stands in at 1 for Rory Schlein whilst Oxford’s Luke Killeen replaces collarbone injury victim Jacob Hook at reserve.

In further terrible news for the Bandits, Thomas Jorgensen crashed out at Edinburgh last night with the former Bear suffering serious back injuries. Everyone at Redcar Speedway sends their best wishes to Thomas. With Jorgensen unable to take his place in the side, Berwiick bring in Birmingham’s Justin Sedgmen as a guest. 

Redcar again track an unchanged 1-7 with Luke Harrison looking to capitalise on his extended youth experience around Shielfield Park to score some more points for the Bears whilst Charles Wright will be hoping to make it 6 double figure scores (as a Bear) on the spin at the home of the Bandits.

Redcar produced a vintage performance to end Oxford’s unbeaten league start to the season with a superb 48-42 win. Danny King top scored for the “Agilia” Bears with 10 whilst Sam Masters and Benjamin Basso both hit 11 for the visitors. 

Oxford started the night with a heat advantage as Sam Masters took the win after he passed Danyon Hume on lap 2 to take the chequered flag and with Danny King suffering bike problems at the back, the Cheetahs began in the ascendency. Heat 2 saw a superb moment as a clearly overjoyed Luke Harrison made a superb goal to win and with Jason Edwards riding a clever line to protect his younger teammate, the Bears had a 5-1 and a slender 2 point lead. 

However, Oxford immediately hit back with a maximum 5-1 of their own as Jordan Jenkins came back to haunt his former side, and with Kyle Howarth keeping a faster looking Connor Bailey behind, the Cheetahs had a 2 point advantage of their own. Heat 4 saw Redcar level proceedings with a 4-2 as Wright rode superbly to hold off Oxford’s fast looking guest, Benjamin Basso and with Luke Harrison keeping Ryan Kinsley at the rear in the battle for third, Redcar were back level. 

After Oxford riders (Masters & Basso) headed home heats 5 & 6 in shared races, Redcar retook the lead in a superb heat 7. Oxford’s guest, Kyle Howarth led the race and when Charles Wright locked up on lap 2, Howarth looked set for the win until Wright flew past Howarth entering lap 4 to take the 3 points, and with Jenkins at the back, Redcar were back in a familiar 2 point lead. 

Heat 8 was a frenetic encounter which initially looked set to be a Bears 4-2 until Henry Atkins took a nasty tumble on bends 1 & 2 of lap 3 with the race being re-ran with 3 riders only. The re-run saw Redcar gate on a 5-1 until Cameron Heeps passed Luke Harrison and then set chase after Danyon Hume but the Bears number 2 rode intelligently to keep the Australian behind and the Bears had a 26-22 advantage at the ECCO Arena. 

Another brace of shared heats saw the electric looking Basso win heat 9 whilst King won heat 10 to ensure the Bears remained in charge. Heat 11 saw the Cheetahs gate on a 4-2 but Wright passed Heeps on lap 3 to ensure Redcar’s 4 point lead remained intact. Heat 12 saw superb speedway as Connor Bailey and Jason Edwards rode as a partnership to keep Howarth behind and with that, the Bears now had an 8 point advantage heading into the closing stages. 

Heat 13 saw controversy as Sam Masters was excluded for breaking the tapes with the Oxford management insisting their number 1 had only broken the tapes due to Danny King moving at the start but the referee was not for turning which resulted in Masters going off 15m in the re-run. The re-run saw Basso win despite early pressure from King, but with Masters unable to make any impression off the handicap, the Bears 8 point lead remained intact. 

Heat 14 saw Oxford team manager, Peter Schroeck play his tactical substitute in the shape of Kyle Howarth and the switch paid dividends as Jenkins won and with Howarth in second, the Cheetahs were back within 4 and we had a last heat decider at the ECCO Arena. 

The final heat of a classic encounter was preceded by loud home support for Redcar’s heat 15 representatives, King and Wright. King gated and won superbly whilst Wright had a superb scrap with Masters for second with the pair swapping places only for the Oxford stand-in skipper to win the battle but with King winning, Redcar inflicted Oxford’s first league defeat of the season after a superb scrap at the ECCO Arena. 

Oxford did however take away the aggregate bonus point with a 92-86 success over the 2 league fixtures.

Erik Riss has fired a warning to the Oxford Cheetahs, with the German full of confidence that the “Agilia ” Bears can be the first side to defeat Oxford in the Cab Direct Championship this season with tapes up at 7:30 at the ECCO Arena. 

Riss, who hit an impressive paid 13 against Scunthorpe last week, believes the Bears can do the job against the current table toppers, “ We are good enough to beat the Cheetahs, last week against Scunthorpe it was a little closer than some expected but if we all perform up to our capabilities then we can win!”

The German star, who represented his country at the Speedway World Cup on Tuesday, believes he is getting close to his best around Redcar after illness played havoc with the 27 year old’s start to 2023, “ I have been playing catch up with my bikes and engines after I was out for 10 weeks with illness but I have now found the right engine with the right set-up at home.”

Oxford are without Lewi Kerr who still sidelined with a collarbone injury with the Cheetahs promotion bringing in Plymouth’s Kyle Howarth to guest and Riss believes missing Kerr may be a slight advantage for Redcar, “ They have brought in a good guest in Howarth. However, with Lewi being a former Redcar rider he knows the track really well so that may weaken them a little bit.”

Riss also heaped praise on his partner in the engine room, Connor Bailey, who continues to go from strength to strength for Redcar, “ I’m a good gater but there have been a couple of times where Connor has outgated me and that is really impressive! I think Connor is riding really well at the moment!”

The former Long Track World Champion is acutely aware of the threat posed by his opposite number, Jordan Jenkins tomorrow night, with the Bears asset making his first appearance at the ECCO Arena since his winter switch to the Cheetahs. “ Jordan has been riding really well this year, he knows the Redcar track inside out so he will be a tough test but I’ll just have to take care of him!”

With this mouthwatering clash being the second fixture between the sides this season, the aggregate bonus point is up for grabs with Redcar having to overturn a 14 point deficit from their 52-38 defeat at Sandy Lane earlier this season. 

Redcar once again name an unchanged septet with Luke Harrison continuing to deputise for the injured Jake Mulford. Meanwhile, Oxford have named six of their 7 regular riders with Sam Masters and Scott Nicholls bringing strong top order power for the league leaders whilst another former Bear, Ryan Kinsley makes his return to Redcar. Additionally, Oxford’s guest, Kyle Howarth will be looking to replicate his last performance at Redcar after he scored 12 last month for the Plymouth Gladiators.

Redcar preserved their undefeated league run with a pulsating 48-42 win over the Scunthorpe Scorpions at the ECCO Arena. Charles Wright top scored with 13 whilst the impressive Connor Mountain led the charge for the visitors with 14+1.

The Cab Direct Championship clash began with an unsatisfactory start as Danny King hit the deck on the opening bend but the re-run saw the Scorpions hit a heat advantage as Ryan Douglas won whilst Drew Kemp kept Danyon Hume at the rear to give Scunthorpe the early impetus on Teesside. Further damage arrived for the Bears in heat 2 as the Scorpions reserve pairing, Connor Mountain and Nathan Ablitt team rode Jason Edwards out of the race in the early stages and then duly pulled away to send the visitors into an early 9-3 advantage.

However, the Bears showed their battling spirit as they immediately hit back with a maximum heat advantage as the in-form Connor Bailey was joined at the front by Erik Riss to haul the Bears within 2 points of their play-off rivals. Heat 3 was won by the skipper, Wright but the Bears man was put under calculated pressure by Mountain but with Luke Harrison at the back, Scunthorpe’s slender lead remained intact.

Douglas continued his undefeated start with a heat 5 success but the Bears engine room, Bailey and Riss both rounded Kemp on lap 1 to ensure Redcar remained 2 behind. Redcar hit the front after a superb maximum heat advantage as King and Hume rode superbly to keep Jake Allen at the back despite Allen passing King entering lap 4, only for the former British Champion to re-pass Allen and his partner, Hume to take the win and the Bears had a 2 point advantage of their own.

Heat 7 saw Simon Lambert excluded after having a nasty collision with the bend 2 air fence on lap 1 and the re-run saw the Bears double their advantage to 4 points as Wright won yet again to remain undefeated and with Harrison in 3rd, Redcar had the initiative at the ECCO Arena.

Heat 8 saw another nasty looking tumble for a Scunthorpe man as Kemp hit the air fence but this time, all 4 men were invited back for the restaging. The re-run saw Mountain continue his superb evening with a win, but with Kemp at the back, Redcar remained in front.

Heat 9 saw a superb last lap scrap between Allen and Riss with the German gaining a huge amount of ground entering bend 3 of the final lap but Allen held on in a shared race. Allen, in as rider replacement, continued an impressive evenings work with a heat 10 win and with Lambert passing Hume on lap 2, Redcar’s lead was under threat as the hosts now only led by 2.

After Wright lowered Douglas’ colours to win a shared heat 11 and after Bailey won a shared heat 12, things were becoming extremely tense at the ECCO Arena. Heat 13 saw Danny King break the tapes with Edwards replacing him. The re-run saw Scunthorpe take the lead for the first time since heat 5 with a 5-1 and the “Agilia” Bears fans were biting their nails with another tense finish ahead.

Heat 14 saw some of the tension released with a superb Redcar 5-1 as Riss won comfortably but the story was unfolding behind “The Business” as Edwards eventually fought to hold off Mountain and Lambert. Edwards, riding a mid track line, came under immense pressure from both Scorpions at the conclusion of lap 2 but the Bears reserve rode superbly to hold off both Scunthorpe men to send the Bears 2 points ahead heading into heat 15.

Heat 15 saw Redcar have the all important choice of gates with gate 1 not providing much help to the riders. With this in mind, Redcar elected for gates 2 & 4 with Riss and Wright against Douglas and Allen. The visitors gated on a 4-2 as Douglas took the lead with Allen in 3rd and a super heat was a possibility. However, Allen was usurped by Wright who then set sail after Douglas with the skipper passing the Scunthorpe number 1 with Douglas suffering a puncture at the same time which enabled Riss to come through for a Redcar 5-1 and a 48-42 home success with Scunthorpe claiming the aggregate bonus point.

Redcar’s new U21 British Champion, Connor Bailey believes that joining Redcar has “improved him and made him a more rounded rider” ahead of the Bears Cab Direct Championship clash with Scunthorpe tomorrow evening with tapes up at 7:30 at the ECCO Arena.

Bailey, who rode superbly to secure his maiden major title in the UK is hopeful the U21 crown can be the springboard to more success, “ Hopefully winning the U21’s will help me to keep improving. In these last few weeks I have picked up and hopefully that upward trajectory can continue as we move towards the business end of the season.”

The likeable Brit thinks his move to the “Agilia” Bears has been a breath of fresh air for his career, “ It’s been a nice breath of fresh air to move away from a club (Glasgow) that I have been with for a long time. I’m really enjoying my time at Redcar! Riding at Redcar has made me a better rounded rider and I think I’ve improved on away tracks. It has also been great to get to know the new fans and how things work at Redcar.”

Bailey is well aware of the threats possessed by the Scorpions with several Scunthorpe men having shown a likeness for the ECCO Arena throughout their respective careers, “ It’s always the same with Redcar, everyone likes to ride there! We are up for the meeting and I’m hoping I can recreate the speed I’ve had in the last couple of meetings and get some more points on the board!”

Bailey, who now rides for 3 UK teams whilst also racing in the U24 Polish league, has dismissed any thoughts of burning himself out, “I think I’ve been coping okay and I’ve just been getting enough sleep in as possible! My mechanics have been great, I have a guy out in Poland who’s very happy to help me and I have Matt in the UK who looks after my bikes when I’m not in the country. It’s really important that I keep the workload to a minimum and just focus on my racing.”

Redcar again bring in Luke Harrison to deputise for injury victim Jake Mulford with the Bears looking to claim vital league points against a direct play-off rival. Additionally, for the Bears to gain the aggregate bonus point, they must overturn a 55-35 deficit from Redcar’s visit to Scunthorpe earlier this season. Moreover, Bears team manager, Gavin Parr has stuck with the same riding order with Connor Bailey continuing at 3 which see’s Erik Riss remain at 4.

Scunthorpe have declared rider replacement for ex-Bear Michael Palm-Toft unless a suitable guest can be found. Nathan Ablitt will be hoping to continue his recent upward trajectory whilst Jake Allen will be looking to fire his teammates to victory against his former side. Moreover, Drew Kemp will be hoping to recapture his previous superb record at the ECCO Arena whilst Ryan Douglas will be a threat for the Scorpions at number 1.
