Redcar’s Adam Roynon has hailed Redcar’s club togetherness and will to succeed ahead of the Bears Championship clash with Leicester this Friday, 19:30 start at the Ecco Arena. “There’s a real will and want to succeed at Redcar and from the riders to the fans there is a real togetherness within the club. Everything is going well in the early stages and the signs are good as everyone is working together as a unit to achieve success.”

Roynon also dismissed any talk of an easier nights work after Leicester’s 2 heavy away defeats at Scunthorpe and Plymouth respectively, “Leicester losing their first 2 away matches comfortably means nothing. Anything can happen in Speedway and as I have said Leciester are a good team so it’s just a case of our 100% being better than Leicester’s on the night.”

On the contrary, the former Coventry star knows his side are in for a tough test against the 2019 league champions, “Leicester have a really strong side but so do we. This league is tight throughout the competition and there will be upsets and shocks along the way but we have to make sure we come out on top when we are racing.

The Cumbrian believes his side are gelling well together, something that has been echoed by his teammates recently, “Friday will be a tough test but I think we are just finding our feet as a 1-7 now and the squad are bonding well together. Our riders who double up are scoring well for their other clubs which can only be a positive sign for Redcar and our chances come the end of the season.”

The Brit is determined to make a success of his third spell in Bears colours, “I really want things to work out for me at Redcar. I want to score as many points as possible and win every race but with the Ecco Arena being such an amazing track the opposition all love racing the circuit which does make it harder!”

Roynon also addressed his recent mechanical issues, “We are on the way to solving my bike problems but you cannot legislate for things happening like my clutch exploding on the start line. Friday is a new day and another chance to go again and perform.”

Both sides are at full strength ahead of the meeting with the “Agilia” Bears looking to continue their 100% start to the campaign whilst the Lions will be looking to bounce back after their aforementioned heavy defeats on their travels.

Anders Rowe will be looking to show the Bears promotion why they were wrong to replace him last season with a strong display whilst Redcar’s Jason Edwards will be looking to build on his impressive evening against Birmingham.

The Tigers are at full strength ahead of their return whilst the Cubs track Alex Goldsbrough guests in place of Kyran Lyden who serves the final day of his concussion suspension after his crash at the under 21 British semi-final.

The match will be a closely contested derby affair with the Tigers returning to the shale after a 34 year hiatus, it is not one to be missed so stay back and support Speedway’s next generation!

Redcar’s unbeaten start to 2022 continued with a fine 50-40 victory over the Birmingham Brummies with Lewis Kerr proving a class apart with an immaculate full maximum. The Bears heat leaders again scored double figures to continue their impressive starts to the campaign.

Birmingham were no pushovers throughout a competitive evening at the Ecco Arena as they led after heat 2 with a surprising 5-1 as James Pearson and Stefan Nielsen combined to give the Brummies a 7-5 lead. Back to back shared heats followed as Lewis Kerr and Adam Ellis won by comfortable margins to keep Birmingham in a slim lead. Kerr continued his perfect evening with the Kings Lynn man diving underneath Claus Vissing to take the win whilst Kasper Andersen got the better of Josh Auty to take 3rd.

Birmingham yet again hit the front with a 4-2 of their own in heat 6 and retook the lead as the 2021 British Champion Adam Ellis got the better of the 2019 Champion Charles Wright on the 2nd bend to take a comfortable win. Once again the pendulum swung back in Redcar’s direction as Jason Edwards rode another great race to hold off Josh Auty for 2 laps but held on for an important 3rd place.

The ding dong nature of the encounter continued with the 4th successive 4-2, but this time in the Brummies favour as Adam Roynon limited the damage to split Ashley Morris and Nielsen but Birmingham still held a slender 2 point lead. Redcar then hit a vital blow with a 5-1 as Andersen got the better of Ellis by using the outside line to send the Bears into their own slender advantage.

Another massive moment came in heat 13 as Charles Wright made the move of the night with a startling inside dive on Claus Vissing. Vissing was then excluded after trying to repay the favour on lap 3 which gave the Bears an all important maximum heat advantage to send Redcar to the cusp of victory. Jason Edwards yet again played an important role in heat 14 with a vital 2nd place as he dived up the inside of Morris to secure the Bears the all important 3 points.

Last week’s heat 15 was a disappointment for the Bears as Plymouth hit a 5-1 to take a point home. This week history was not to repeat itself as Lewis Kerr completed a fine maximum and the testimonial man was joined by Erik Riss as the Bears capped off their evening with a 10 point home win.

Jason Edwards was pleased with his best night as a Bear to date, “I’m happy because I’m improving every week and I’m taking little strides forward each week.”

Edwards believes he can make further improvements as the season progresses, “I’d like to think that if we had this meeting later in the season I would be able to keep them riders behind me. At this stage these riders are just better than me so it’s all about learning how to ride against these guys.”

Finally, the Redcar reserve had some positive words for the Bears heat leader trio, “They make it look so easy, it can be quite annoying! Charles (Wright) and his mechanics have been very helpful to me, Erik (Riss) is flying and Lewis (Kerr) is helping us to wins at the moment which is really important.”

Redcar’s Lewi Kerr believes the Bears are beginning to find their groove around the Ecco Arena as he fired a warning to Redcar’s Championship rivals ahead of the clash with Birmingham this Friday (7:30pm start), “We are all starting to come together now, we had a good win against Plymouth who are one of the best sides in the league so I don’t see why we can’t hit a big score at home in the near future.”

Kerr is pleased with his start to 2022, “I’ve had a couple of bike problems at home but we’ve solved them now. I scored 11 points at Newcastle on Sunday and overall, I’m happy with how I’ve started the campaign.”

The 2021 Silver Helmet winner is aiming to be as consistent as possible, “I’m aiming for double figures out of every meeting this season, that’s my target and then we go from there!”

The Kings Lynn star also reserved special praise for the Bears promoters, “I’m loving my time at Redcar and I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else! The promotion gives a lot back to the supporters which is really important and they are also really forward thinking which is really refreshing. Redcar is such a great place to be!”

Redcar are back at full strength for the SGB Championship clash as Jason Edwards returns to the septet after going through the card in the British under 21 semi-final at Mildenhall on Sunday. Erik Riss will be hoping to continue his scintillating start to the season with another double figure score against his former side.

On the other hand, Birmingham are forced to run rider replacement in the absence of James Shanes who is forced to sit out after suffering concussion whilst riding in a grasstrack meeting this past weekend.

The Brummies are led by their new skipper Ashley Morris, he is joined by Claus Vissing, former Bear Josh Auty and Stefan Nielsen who guested for the Bears last season and won the rider of the night award! Birmingham have also recruited James Pearson who is widely tipped for a strong future in the sport. The second city’s side is completed by the current British champion Adam Ellis who recently described the Ecco Arena as his favourite track on the planet on the Humans of Speedway podcast!

Redcar remained undefeated in 2022 and picked up their first piece of silverware after fighting their way to a share of the spoils against a dogged Newcastle side. The second leg score was a 45-45 draw which meant Redcar won the trophy with a 105-74 aggregate scoreline.

Redcar’s heat leader trio of Charles Wright, Lewis Kerr and Erik Riss yet again did a great job with all 3 hitting double figures whilst Riss continued his fantastic start to the season with a paid maximum.

The meeting began with a share of the spoils as Wright took a win from the gate to begin Redcar’s charge towards the 91 points they needed to retain the trophy. Heat 2 saw Jordan Jenkins pop out of the start to take a hugely impressive win with only his second outing at Brough Park. The North-East rivals exchanged 4-2 heat advantages in heats 3 and 4 with Riss making a fantastic gate in his opener to start the meeting off as he meant to go on.

Newcastle edged their noses ahead on the night in heat 5 with a 4-2 as Max Clegg held off a strong early challenge from Wright. Meanwhile, the battle at the back saw James Wright pass Adam Roynon to give the Diamonds fans hope of a win on the night but even the most optimistic of Diamonds fans could not have hoped for a monumental comeback. The 8th race saw some cracking action with Jenkins leading the veteran Matthew Wethers until the last bend when Jenkins ran wide which gave the Australian the opportunity to make an inside swoop to take the win.

Shared heats were the order of the day as 7 consecutive 3-3’s were recorded between heats 6-12 which kept Newcastle 2 in front with the Bears having already secured the aggregate win. Ahead of the final 3 races you felt that the match would be decided on heats 13 and 14 and with Redcar having the duo of Wright and Riss in 13 the Teessiders stood every chance of taking the maximum heat advantage they craved.

Drama ensued in heat 13 with Charles Wright winning comfortably but with Paul Starke sitting in a seemingly comfortable second it looked like the Bears were only set for a 4-2. Amazingly, there was a twist as Starke and the Diamonds were left to rue their luck as the Ipswich man suffered an engine failure on the last lap to hand Riss second and the Bears a 5-1 to send them into a 2 point lead.

The Diamonds weren’t about to lie down on their home track and they hit back with a 5-1 of their own with Lee Complin showing his home fans he means business on his return to the sport with an impressive win whilst Max Clegg hunted down Kasper Andersen and Tom Woolley to send Newcastle 2 up with heat 15 to go.

Newcastle won a last heat decider in their opener against a Stoke select but this time the Bears got the minimum they required with a 4-2 as Erik Riss completed his perfect day whilst Lewis Kerr bombed up the inside of Max Clegg on lap 3 to ensure Redcar remained undefeated in the early stages of the campaign.

Maximum man Riss was happy with his day, “I’m very happy with today, I got a little lucky in heat 13 with Paul Starke suffering an engine failure but apart from that I won every race, we won a trophy so I’m pleased.”

The double World Longtrack champion had words of encouragement for Newcastle, “Tonight was a much tougher challenge, a few of their riders are really track specialists and quick around here and they were much stronger at home.”

The 2019 Championship Riders Individual Champion explained the complexities around team riding on such a tight circuit, “When you need a 5-1 to win on the tighter tracks you hope that you can both make the gate but unfortunately Lewi (Kerr) couldn’t join me at the front, it’s really hard to make passes around here and you cannot wait around for your teammate because if you make one mistake the opposition are past you.”

Redcar’s flying reserve Jordan Jenkins has reminded his side there is no room for complacency ahead of the Tyne-Tees Trophy second leg this Sunday at the Newcastle stadium, (16:00 start). “Anything is possible in speedway, you can never write anyone off but we can’t be complacent, we have to start fast, make 4 good gates in the first 4 heats and send out a positive message to the opposition.”

Although a two legged affair Jenkins believes the teams mentality remains the same, even with a 31 point lead! “We need to just go out there on Sunday and beat them, we are a confident side and there isn’t negativity in our heads and another win will stand us in good stead.”

Jenkins will be making his first appearance at the Brough Park circuit and he is looking forward to learning from the experience whilst scoring points, “Newcastle will be a new track for me this year so it will be a learning curve personally but I beat their reserves here 2 weeks ago so there’s no reason why I can’t do the same come raceday. Going to Newcastle for the Tyne-Tees Trophy will help before I visit there again in the league and if I can keep up my good form then I will be happy as I have had a good start to 2022.”

Newcastle are at full strength ahead of the clash and they will be hoping for more from Bradley Wilson-Dean after he had the opportunity to get used to the technical Newcastle track in last week’s 46-44 win against a Stoke select side in the Dave Tattum memorial trophy.

On the other hand, the Bears are forced to use their first guest of the campaign with Jason Edwards riding in the under 21 semi-final at Mildenhall Redcar have elected to bring in the 2019 KO Cup winning reserve and Redcar cult hero Tom Woolley. Coincidentally, Woolley’s last appearance for the Teessiders came at Newcastle in 2019 and Woolley will be hoping for a strong performance to impress any potential Championship suitors. Elsewhere, Adam Roynon will be hoping to score big on his return to his home track of 2021.

The Redcar “Agilia” Bears showed their mettle and desire to fight for the crest as they overcame a strong challenge from the Plymouth Gladiators to start their league campaign in impressive fashion with a 48-42 home success.

Redcar have learned how to hit the front and stay on top and that showed as they never let the Gladiators get in front of them in a tight encounter at the Ecco Arena. Charles Wright made an impressive gate in the opener but Chris Harris passed Adam Roynon to limit the damage. Plymouth then hit back in heat 3 with a 4-2 of their own as Ben Barker took a win under intense pressure from Lewis Kerr but Barker used his years as a Bear to hold off the testimonial man.

The Bears then took 2 more 4-2 advantages which stretched their lead to 4 but there was controversy in heat 4 as Erik Riss steamed up the inside of Dan Gilkes with the Gladiator subsequently hitting the deck. The referee deemed Gilkes to be at fault and thus he was excluded with supporters split with their opinions on the decision.

Harris and Kerr provided a classic race for the audience with Harris bombing up the inside of Kerr only for Kerr to re-pass on the run to the line to take the win. 3 successive shared heats followed with Plymouth taking the chequered flag in heats 6 and 8 courtesy of Hans Andersen and Dan Gilkes. The side Garry May (Plymouth TM) has put together is a strong side and they showed why in the first half of the meeting as they recorded 4/8 heat winners.

Heat 11 saw the first 5-1 of the evening and crucially it went to the home side with Plymouth having to race with only Gilkes due to Harris being disqualified for wiping out his partner on the opening bend. However, the Bears still had a job to do and Erik Riss and Jordan Jenkins did that to send the Teessiders into a 6 point lead with Jenkins riding a clever line to see off early pressure from the former Kent starlet.

With the hosts 6 ahead it gave Garry May the opportunity to use his tactical substitute in the shape of their guest Chris Harris. The Gladiators looked set for a 4-2 to cut the gap to 4 only for Harris to suffer bike problems which allowed Jenkins through for a shared heat with Barker again looking quick out in front.

Redcar sealed the deal in heat 13 as their talismanic duo of Wright and Riss combined for a 5-1 to send the Bears 10 clear to secure the 3 league points. The Gladiators hit back with a 5-1 of their own in heat 15 courtesy of Michael Palm-Toft and Harris to claim a consolation point many felt they deserved after a strong showing at the Ecco Arena.

Plymouth boss Garry May was content with his side’s work on the evening, “I’m happy with the point, we worked hard for the point and I think we deserved it on balance. There were a couple of dodgy refereeing decisions which didn’t go my way but Redcar are a really strong side and I don’t see many people winning here.”

May also updated supporters on their missing number 1 Edward Kennett, “Edward Kennett has got to have an operation on his arm, he has a plate sticking out of arm in 3 places and we will see what happens after the operation. I am hoping the authorities will allow us to use guests as it was a Speedway injury.”

Redcar’s Jordan Jenkins was happy with his paid 9 return, “ Paid 9 is a much better score than I would have got last year so I can’t be grumbling! I have lots of learning to do but I am quite happy as I have not ridden in 10 days.”

Jenkins also reserved praise for his teammates who stepped up this evening, “ The boys rode well this evening, I was looking at Plymouth’s 1-7 before the meeting and they are a strong side with Tofty (Michael Palm-Toft) at 4 and three other genuine heat leaders. The boys had to be on their A game and they all were which got us the win. Our 2022 side are gating a lot better than last year and that is a massive help at the start of meetings which is allowing us to hit our opponents hard.”

Redcar’s German star Erik Riss has warned his teammates that they must be on their game to defeat a strong Plymouth side this Friday at the Ecco Arena, 19:30 start.

The double World Longtrack champion knows his side need to be on the top of their game, “I think it’s going to be a battle of the heat leaders, Plymouth have a strong top 3. I think me, Charles (Wright) and Lewis (Kerr) need to beat their top riders to take the pressure off the rest of our team. If we can do our jobs and beat our opposite numbers then things should go well on Friday.”

Riss, who doubles up with the Ipswich Witches in the SGB Premiership is happy with his start to the season, especially after he fell below his high standards last season, “I’m really happy with my start to the season in the UK, I have scored well for Redcar and Ipswich, I have scored double figures for both of my UK clubs. This season has started much better than 2021. I always knew that it wasn’t me as you don’t forget how to ride a bike but my engines did not combine well with the new tyres and that was a problem. After getting some new equipment I have now solved the problem and things have started well.”

The German star also had some kind words for the Bears reserve pairing, “I have been really impressed with Jason (Edwards) and Jordan (Jenkins). I watched them both on press day, they are both really skilled on the bike and they have a really nice riding style. Both of them did really well against Newcastle but I believe Plymouth will be a harder test for the reserves and us as a team.”

The Bears are at full strength for the meeting whilst the Gladiators have brought in Chris Harris to guest in place of the injured Edward Kennett. Plymouth have assembled a strong looking septet ahead of the new season with Hans Andersen captaining the side, Andersen is joined by former Bears Ben Barker and Michael Palm-Toft whilst they have one of the early season stars in Dan Gilkes who scored 16 points from reserve on Tuesday in the Gladiators defeat to Poole.

The Gladiators will be hoping their league campaign starts on the first whistle after they were dumped out of the KO Cup by the reigning champions, Poole.

Redcar are also hosting British Speedway’s new streaming service, The British Speedway Network (BSN) this Friday as they stream from the Ecco Arena after the network had a successful debut at Berwick last Saturday. Bears fans are also reminded that Easter egg donations can be made to the Speedway office ahead of Redcar’s visit to James Cook hospital. Redcar asset Jordan Jenkins is looking forward to potentially spoiling the party and upsetting the applecart at the Stuart Robson farewell at the Ecco Arena this Friday, (19:30 start). Jenkins said, “I’m hoping to go out there, make some starts, score some points and potentially spoil the party! I’ve been out on the bike a lot already this year and things seem like they are falling into place in 2022 so you never know what can happen on the night!”

The 2021 National League winner had some kind words for Robson who spent a year with the Bears in 2015, “It’s a pleasure to be a part of the meeting and it’s nice to be asked to ride in the meeting! I don’t think I ever rode against Robbo (Stuart Robson) but I grew up watching him race and he was a fantastic rider.”

The Oxford Charger’s captain also believes he can be more potent at the Ecco Arena, “I know I can score bigger both home and away and I won’t settle until I am performing at my best. I do think I can improve the most at home in front of our home fans as the Newcastle meeting was my highest home score and that’s not good enough but I feel like a different rider this year, I feel quicker and I know I can improve!”

Jenkins was impressive with paid 10 in Redcar’s comprehensive win over Newcastle last week but he believes there is more to come, “I had some clutch problems last Friday which made it hard for me to make a good gate but I have solved that now so it will not be a problem moving forward. On the other hand, scoring paid 10 when I didn’t feel 100% is good and when I feel 100% I can hopefully score bigger!”

Jenkins also believes the amount of practising he has been doing in the UK and Poland is improving his abilities on the bike, “When I practised last year I came off the bike feeling okay and this year I am coming off the bike feeling fast and feeling more confident on the bike and that can only be a good sign for me and the Redcar fans!”

The meeting has attracted some stellar names who are keen to show their respect to a British speedway legend and gain some valuable pre-season laps before the UK league season gets into full swing. Chris Harris, Richie Worrall and Danny King are some of the names you would expect to be in the mix in the latter stages of the meeting.

The 16 rider field includes 3 riders who have rode for the Bears in the past (Josh Auty, Michael Palm-Toft and Ulrich Ostergaard) and 2 riders who currently race for the club in Charles Wright and Jordan Jenkins. The Ecco Arena crowd are sure to get behind the Bears racing in the meeting and with the pair scoring paid 25 between them against Newcastle it wouldn’t be a surprise to see at least one Redcar rider on the podium at the end of the night!

The meeting will be ran in the Grand Prix format with 20 heats followed by a semi final and final. Additionally, the action will also include 4 races from Great Britain’s 125cc and 250cc Young Lions as fans get to see a sneak peek of the stars of the future with Steen Pijper and Luke Harrison 2 of the names involved in the action.

Spectators are reminded that due to the nature of the meeting it will be cash only turnstiles and Stuart is keen to see as many fans from the teams he has represented present at the Ecco Arena.
