The S.G.Petch Bears have suffered a set back in their challenge to reach a play off position with the withdrawal of Danny Ayres from the weekend’s fixtures through illness. Co-Promoter Jittendra Duffill said: “Whilst it is disappointing we won’t have Danny for these critical matches we wish him well and have been fortunate to secure the services of Liam Carr for the match at Glasgow. Liam is a very capable replacement and we thank him for stepping in at such late notice. The Bears are still full of optimism and know it’s a must win fixture if the club are to reach a top four spot.”

Rider replacement will be used for the still injured Jason Garrity with Nathan Greaves replacing the unavailable Tobias Busch. Ben Barker will once again ride through the pain barrier although he showed no signs of a handicap whilst winning the Erimus Insurance ‘best celebration’ award at the Ecco Finishing sponsored Teesside Silver Helmet meeting.

On a wet night at the Media Prima Arena, home favourite Charles Wright took a well deserved victory as he won the Teesside Silver Helmet on Thursday night.

On what had been a nice day on Teesside, a heavy downpour an hour before the start of the meeting, and some drizzle throughout the first 8 heats contributed to a tricky surface for the start of the meeting. Terry the Track and his staff did a superb job to get the meeting on, and full credit to every single rider who got on with the meeting with no complaints to put on a good show for the crowd.

Despite the tricky conditions there was still some excellent action on track, with Paul Starke, Charles Wright and Ty Proctor impressing early on.  Bears asset, and popular Dane Jacob Bukhave was perhaps the surprise of the night – riding superbly for his 9 points and only missing out on the semi final on racewins. He surely put himself in the shop window for next season. Ellis Perks also finished on 9 and also just missed out on the semi final but it was another good night for the young Brit. 

After the completion of the qualifying heats, Richard Lawson and Charles Wright qualified directly to the final which left Aaron Summers, Ty Proctor, Paul Starke and Ryan Douglas in the semi final. Summers was clear in front, with Proctor and Douglas having a great battle for second spot. The Scunthorpe man Douglas made a great pass up the inside of Proctor, and as Proctor attempted to re-pay the favour he clipped his fellow Aussie causing him to fall. Paul Starke was following close behind and did well to miss the stricken Douglas, but the incident caused ex-Bear Proctor to be excluded with Summer and Douglas moving to the final.

In the final, Wright gated superbly and whilst Summers and Lawson chased him hard there was no catching the Bears man who took a deserved win.

The Bears are next in action away to Glasgow on Saturday, before travelling to Newcastle on Sunday and Sheffield on Monday.

Due to last minute withdrawals former Bears Kevin Doolan and Ben Morley step into the meeting at short notice to replace Jye Etheridge and Richie Worrell.
First race will be at 7:30 prompt so get there early to see the 22 heats plus a special ‘ second half match race.

Richie Worrall has withdrawn from tomorrow night’s Teesside Silver Helmet due to illness.

Ex Bear Ben Morley has been drafted in to replace him. 

British youngster Joe Jacobs has been drafted into the Teesside Silver Helmet meeting, to replace Lewis Kerr who is now unavailable. Jacobs was a victim of the averages game this season and is looking to put himself in the shop window for a team place next season, having had a successful short spell with Berwick earlier this season. Team manager and co-promoter Jitendra Dufill is looking forward to what should be a great meeting:

“With re-arranged fixtures in England and Denmark, injuries and changes in the rules trying to get riders has proved extremely difficult and we have lost count of the number of riders we have contacted this week, including several Premiership riders. We still expect this to be a very exciting lineup with a few fun and games thrown in so don’t miss out!”

The reserves for the meeting will be David Wallinger and Ryan Burton. 

This Thursday see’s the running of the Teesside Silver Helmet at the Media Prima Arena, one of the oldest running individual meetings in Speedway. This years event is kindly sponsored by Keith Miller of Ecco Finishing Supplies.  The meeting will be ran over 20 qualifying heats, with the top two going direct to the final and places 3-6 into the semi final.

A competitive line-up has certainly been put together for this meeting, with one-time GP rider and a record 7 times British Champion Scott Nicholls leading the field. Plying his trade this year for Rye House in the Premier League, it will be Scotts first visit to Redcar.  Last years winner, Thomas Jorgensen, will be hoping to defend his crown on a track he normally rides very well. The Bears in the lineup – Charles Wright, Ellis Perks and Ben Barker will also fancy their chances after some dominant performances around the Teesside track over the last few weeks.

It is a strong field however, and a number of riders will be expecting to top the podium at the end of the night. Another pair of ex-winners, Aaron Summers and Ty Proctor, will be looking to win it for a second time and certainly know the fastest way around the MPA. Newcastle captain Ludvig Lindgren, who made a donation to the Bears at the start of the season after the theft in the clubhouse, is another who on his night can look unbeatable. 

Three riders who have had very good years, Richie Worrall, Paul Starke and Richard Lawson are also more than capable of making the podium with all putting in good performances at the MPA this season. Ashley Morris, a late replacement for Jason Garrity, makes it two Newcastle riders in the field and will be looking to cause an upset. Lewis Kerr, who was originally scheduled to take the number 6 bib, has now withdrawn from the meeting, his replacement will be announced as soon as we have it.

The last three riders in the line-up all have links to the Bears. Coty Garcia is rewarded for his great spell earlier in the season with a place. Coty, an injury replacement for Tobias Busch proved very popular with the Redcar crowd and it will be great to see him making another appearance. Jye Etheridge had a spell at the Bears last season, and this season at Berwick has really kicked on. He provided some excellent racing in Berwicks last visit to Teesside and will be looking for more of the same this week. Jacob Bukhave rounds off the field, the popular Dane who had a spell with Redcar last season. Jacob has spent a lot of time this season riding in individual meetings all around the continent, and will be looking to catch the eye here.

Jason Garrity will take the opportunity to rest his injuries this week and therefore miss Thursday’s meeting and will be replaced by Ashley Morris from Newcastle who will now have two representatives in the meeting. 

“With three important matches coming up this weekend we need to give Jason as much time as possible to be fit for these very important fixtures” said co- promoter Kevin Keay.
This week’s bad weather has lead to a number of rearranged fixtures and difficulties in rider availability . Lewis Kerr has now accepted another guest booking and his replacement will be announced shortly. 

The end of season function tickets which are selling quickly, will shortly be able to be purchased online via the club ‘ helpline’. Further details will be added to the club website soon.

Kevin Keay has heaped huge praise on gutsy skipper Ben Barker as injury-crippled Redcar are still counting the cost of an outstanding victory over Championship leaders Sheffield. The SG Petch Bears beat the table topping Tigers – so ending a club record 13-match winning run – on Friday, although hopes of an even more unlikely double were washed out yesterday when the South Yorkshire side’s flooded Owlerton Stadium track was deemed unraceable. it left a bitter-sweet feeling in the Bears camp as they would have been without former Sheffield star Jason Garrity, who badly damaged a shoulder during the sides’ notfor-the-feint-hearted clash on Teesside, and severely handicapped by injuries to skipper Barker, Tobias Busch and Jonas B Andersen.

Barker was bravely prepared to battle through the pain barrier and ride at Sheffield, despite having broken his left wrist in a separate but equally spectacular crash on Friday, while German Busch (ankle) and Dane Andersen (hip) are still carrying the scars of pileups the previous week. Yesterday’s return clash was called off early following the enormous amount of rain that fell on Saturday, with a re-staging date set for next Monday, September 18 – the final day before the cut-off for scheduled league matches. This means three away matches on successive nights for the already stretched Bears in a bold bid to still snatch the final play-off place but Keay insists: “It’s got to be good for us as it gives our injury concerns a few more days to heal and we have managed to get them to re-stage it within the cut-off date.

“Sheffield are already assured of a play-off place so didn’t need to do that and we really appreciate their efforts. “Riding three matches in three days – all away – is a tall ask but that reflects the kind of season that Redcar have had. “Ben is one heck of a character. “He had his wrist put in plaster by the hospital after the meeting but turned up at the track the following morning, cut his pot off with an intent to see if he could ride. “We talked him out of practising but he was prepared to give it a go for the sake of the club. “We would have had a lot of trouble replacing him at such short notice and, whatever comments might have been made about his actions, it’s his decision and his life and he is putting the club first. “What else can you do but praise him for that? “it does further show the tremendous team spirit within the
club at the moment.”

That was more than evident on Friday as in-form Sheffield, who had not been beaten since July 12, twice forged a six-point lead, only to be pegged back after a twicerun heat 13. in the first staging, a pulsating opening lap ended with Charles Wright powering under Tigers Josh Grajczonek, seconds before Kyle Howarth took Barker’s front wheel away as they passed under the starting tapes. Howarth was excluded, leaving the Bears skipper to come out on his spare bike and now nursing a fractured wrist and follow Wright home in the rerun for the 5-1 which levelled matters. Busch and Andersen, both still sore from crashes the previous week, then edged the Battling Bears ahead for the first time with another 5-1 in heat 14, before Wright, who dropped just one point all night – to Howarth in heat 4 – and the now-in-much-pain Barker completed the job in the final race. Former Redcar number one Lasse Bjerre managed to split the pair and so wreck the previously unbeaten by an opponent Barker’s maximum hopes, but neither his courage or the enormity of the Teessiders’ fourth successive home victory was lost on their best crowd of the season.
