Redcar SG Petch Bears kept up their charge for a play-off spot with a 54-39 win over the Berwick Bandits at the Media Prima Arena on Thursday night.

On a night punctuated with a number of restarts, the Bears took control of the meeting early on and led by 8 after 4 heats. Heat 5 produced the heat of night, with ex-Bear Jye Etheridge taking a superb victory over Ben Barker and Jonas B Andersen. All 3 riders swapped places throughout the heat but Jye held on superbly. Sadly for Jye, and Berwick, his night was brought to a premature end after a nasty looking fall in heat 8. The young Aussie picked up some unexpected grip in the first bend and took a spectacular tumble, and left the track in an ambulance with a suspected leg injury. We all wish Jye a speedy recovery.

From that point the result was never in too much doubt, with the Bears heatleaders all in superb form. Skipper Ben Barker again top scored with 14, but was supported well by Wright, Garrity and Andersen with 9+2, 9 and 8+3 respectively. For the Bandits, guest Steve Worrall top scored with 12, with Etheridge scoring 8 and the evergreen Kevin Doolan with 7+1.

The Bears are next in action at home on Friday 11th against Sheffield, but of course will be competing in the Championship Fours event at Peterborough on Sunday.

Team GB Star Steve Worrall will guest for the Berwick Bandits tonight against the Redcar SG Petch Bears. Worrall, who became a Dad earlier this week, replaces Nick Morris who is riding for Swindon in the Premier League.

Reminder for all SG Petch Bears fans that the racenight to raise funds for Ellis Perks takes place tonight at the Bears Bar. Doors open at 7, admission is £5 which includes a pie and pea supper.

There will be a raffle and all the usual fun and games, plus Ellis will be in attendance to answer any questions you may have, pose for photographs etc.

Redcar SG Petch Bears will aim to build on last weeks victory against Workington, as they take on the Berwick Bandits at the Media Prima Arena this Thursday (7:30pm).

The Bears ran out 49-44 winners last Thursday, and whilst manager Jitendra Duffill was pleased with the victory but slightly disappointed Workington escaped with a league point:

I was pleased with last weeks performance against Workington and we deserved the 3 points we took from the meeting. Again we saw a good, all round performance from our boys. It was disappointing to ‘gift’ them a point as I feel that we should have send them home empty handed. Ours boys were a little too keen at times and I spoke with them after about picking their moments to pass. Exclusions could have proved costly in the end and we should have won by a bigger margin. Having said that, I will never give out boys a hard time about trying too hard as I would rather they do that than ride around at the back waiting for somebody to make a mistake.

Duffill was also pleased with the form of Jason Garrity and Tobias Busch. Both riders have had long spells out of the side with injury this season, but they both rode well on Thursday. And whilst delighted with their performances, is keen to not too much pressure on the pair:

It was great to see Jason Garrity back to his old self. He was the Jason we saw before his injury and it was only a matter of time before he regained form. He’s a bubbly character and we saw a different person off track as well as on it. He can put a bit too much pressure on himself at times and I’d asked him to try and enjoy racing his bike without thinking too much about the politics surrounding it. Tobias Busch was excellent and he showed just why we were so keen to bring him back into the side. His speed and track craft were even more impressive if you take into consideration that he still isn’t 100% fit and is clearly in some discomfort after races. I don’t want to put him under too much pressure and I won’t ask him to do extra rides until he tells me he is ready for it. We need to be patient and let him regain fitness before I can use him more but it will be worth the wait.

This week sees Berwick Bandits come to town. The Bandits have had a difficult season, and are again struck by injury problems. New signing Nikolai Busk Jacobsen injured his shoulder in his first meeting for the Bandits and is not unfortunately out for the remainder of the season. Berwick will operate rider replacement for him. Nick Morris is also missing as he is riding for Swindon, a guest will be brought in for him (tbc). Despite the ill-fortune of the Bandits, Duffill is not taking anything for granted:

This week we welcome the Berwick Bandits and my good friend Gary Havelock back to the Media Prima Arena. Berwick haven’t had the best of times so far in this years SGB Championship but they are a different side to the one that started 2017 and they made life difficult for us last time we met. You can never underestimate anybody because you can end up looking very foolish if you do. We really need to take another 3 points from this fixture and we can’t afford any more slip up’s at home.

The Teesside Silver Helmet meeting scheduled for Thursday 10th of August has been postponed due to rider availability and the S.G.Petch Bears will now ride a home meeting on the Friday the 11th August against the Sheffield Tigers.

“With the fixture’s taking place on the original date we would have been unable to invite the likes of Chris Harris, Craig Cook, Danny King, Richie Worrall and even our own Ben Barker so it just makes sense to move to a date when more of the top riders will be available.” stated promoter Kevin Keay.

“We have two sponsors putting up the funds to enable a top class field so I want to invite as many of the top riders as possible to make it as prestigious a meeting as the Silver Helmet used to be so moving it was the only option. We will still have a meeting that week with the co operation of Sheffield agreeing to attend that Friday evening so the fans will still have top class racing to watch”.

Details of the new date will be announced when possible.

Redcar SG Petch Bears returned to winning ways as they beat the Workington Comets 49-44 at the Media Prima Arena on Thursday night.

It was a tight meeting to start off with, with the first 5 heats being shared 3-3. Jason Garrity and Ellis Perks took a maximum 5-1 in heat 6 however to send their Bears on the way to victory, although the final does not really show how comfortable the victory was. By the end of heat 10 the Bears were 14 points up, with Chris Harris then winning his tactical ride to bring the deficit down to 11. The Comets then rallied towards the end of the meeting and a heat fifteen 5-1 for Harris and ex-Beat Ty Proctor gave the Comets a losing league point.

For the Bears, Jason Garrity top scored with 10+1. although it was a solid performance throughout.  Ellis Perks scored an excellent 8+1 from the number 2 position whilst sponsors man of the meeting Tobias Busch continued his return from injury with an very solid 9 points.

The Bears are next in action against Berwick at home next Thursday,

Ex-GP star and Team GB man Chris Harris will guest for Workington against Redcar at the Media Prima Arena tomorrow night. Craig Cook has picked up an injury and pulled out of all Workington’s meetings this week.

In an effort to assist Ellis Perks repair the damage after his ‘Belle Vue Barbecue’ there will a chance for fans to win themselves hospitality for two at a Bears home match and assist Ellis at the same time. Fans can have a go at the now famous Bears Basketball game at a £1 for three balls and the highest score at the end of the evening wins the prize. All the proceeds will go to Ellis’s Barbecue Fund.

We will also be having a race night for Ellis in the Bears Bar on Wednesday August 2nd. Entry is £5 and includes a pie and pea supper.
