Bears fall by 10 at Panthers
The S.G.Petch Bears face a massive battle on Thursday to stay in the cup after a controversial encounter at Peterborough on a Sunday.
Signs were encouraging after the Bears led 14-10 after 4 heats but then a coming together between former Bear Ulrich Østergaard and Tobias Busch left Busch with a suspected broken ankle and gave the Panthers a 5-0 after Garrity had already fallen.
The Panthers built on the Bears frustration with the referee being the only one in the stadium not to see a Panthers rider illegally cut across the centre green to the start line and Perks blowing both of his engines and Hall suffering two snapped chains costing valuable points.
But with Ben Barker battling every ride and Charles Wright a class above the rest recording a full 15 point maximum the Bears managed to keep the damage down to a ten point deficit for the return leg at the Media Prima Arena on Thursday which promises to be an epic battle.

Bears take on Panthers in KO Cup
Redcar SG Petch Bears travel to Peterborough Panthers this afternoon in the first leg of the KO Cup, with a 5pm start. It’s a meeting that has a little bit of extra spice, as the Panthers promoter Ged Rathbone is a Middesbrough man and a regular attendee at the Media Prima Arena!
Both teams will go into the meeting with plenty of confidence – the Bears after their comfortable win on Thursday over a Russ Hodgson select whilst the PAnthers have completed back to back wins over the Scunthorpe Scorpions in league action.
The meeting will be followed by round 1 of the British Youth Championships, with the second leg of the KO Cup taking place back at Redcar on Thursday evening.

Dominant Bears record comfortable win
Redcar SG Petch Bears put in a dominant performance at a chilly Media Prima Arena on Thursday night, running out comfortable 57-35 winners against a Russ Hodgson Select side.
The star of the show for the Bears was undoubtedly Ben Barker. The Cornishman had a tough week with mechanical issues last week, but has worked hard to resolve those this week and recorded a superb 15 point maximum. Barker looked very quick all night, and indeed recorded the fastest time of the night in heat 13. He was ably supported by Charles Wright and Jason Garrity, scoring 11 and 10 respectively, but the whole side chipped in well with important points. The track was again prepared superbly and provided some great racing, with the pick of the bunch probably heat 7. Ben Barker and Carl Wilkinson had a terrific battle out front, with Barker passing Wilkinson going into the final lap whilst at the back Adam Roynon and Richard Hall were having a terrific battle of their own which Hall eventually won.
For the Russ Hodgson select, Carl Wilkinson was the only heat winner after triumphing in heat 12. Richard Lawson top scored with 9+1, with Thomas Jorgensen also chipping in with 9.
The Bears are next in action away to Peterborough on Sunday in the KO Cup, with the return leg next Thursday at the MPA.

Redcar SG Petch Bears v Russ Hodgson Select – Thursday 6th April – 7:30pm start
This Thursday sees the Redcar ‘SG Petch’ Bears ride in a challenge meeting against a Russ Hodgson Select side at the Media Prima Arena with a 7:30pm start. Russ sadly died in December last year – he was an ex Sunderland, Belle Vue and Middlesbrough rider and was a very regular visitor to the Media Prima Arena as a spectator. The Russ Hodgson select side has been put together as a mixture of ex-Bears riders, and riders who go well at the MPA and is sure to provide the Bears with tough opposition. Bears team manager Jitendra Duffill paid tribute to Hodgson, and is looking forward to a tough meeting:
This week we get to honour a club legend and an old friend of mine Russ Hodgson. Anybody who had met Russ would tell you what an amazing person he was and he was always put a smile on my face within seconds of talking to him.
Kev and myself were keen to give our team as much track time as possible before our official fixtures kick in. The Russ Hodgson Select team should provide a good challenge for us and will lay down a bench mark. The opposition are full of riders with plenty of experience of the Media Prima Arena.Unfortunately for the Bears, German star Tobias Busch has had to withdraw from the meeting after suffering serious bruising in an incident whilst racing Ice Speedway last week. Otherwise the Bears are at full strength and will operate rider replacement in Busch’s absence to enable the rest of the team to get some extra track time. Last weeks maximum man Jason Garrity was this week named the new Bears captain, and Duffill was impressed with the whole teams performances last week:
I chose Jason because all his team mates have warmed to his infectious personality quickly and I believe he can be inspirational both on and off the track. Ben had a few bike problems last week but he was always in the mix when he was racing. Jason, Jonas, Richard and Ellis all scored very well and I was particularly pleased with the performance of our reserves.
The Russ Hodgson Select contains ex-Bears number 1 Richard Lawson, who forms a powerful heat leader partnership with Thomas Jorgensen who always rides the MPA very well. The ever exciting Carl Wilkinson and Adam Roynon are also included, as well as new Ipswich signing James Sarjeant, who had been cruelly left without a club after Coventry had folded. The remaining two spots are taken by last years Bears reserves, Jye Etheridge and Lee Payne. Full teams:

Busch to miss Challenge meeting
Tobias Busch has now withdrawn from Thursday’s challenge match due to severe bruising from ice racing incident over the weekend whilst racing in Holland and so the Bears will use R/R to give extra racing time to the clubs newcomers.

Garrity named Bears captain
Jason Garrity has been named captain of the Redcar S.G.Petch Bears for the coming season having impressed the management at both press day and the opening meeting at the Media Prima Arena.
Ben Duffill ( team manager) said ” Jason is an infectious character and has made a big impression on us already. We think he can lead by example and look to set the standard for others to follow”.
Garrity scored an impressive 15 point maximum at the Julie Lewis Memorial meeting on Thursday, and also scored 7 at Belle Vue on Saturday in the Peter Craven Memorial meeting.

Maximum man Garrity roars to victory!
Redcar SG Petch Bears new number 1 Jason Garrity roared to a 15 point maximum and first place in the Julie Lewis Memorial at the Media Prima Arena on Thursday night.
Garrity went through the card unbeaten and never looked like losing a race, with ex Bears captain Ulrich Ostergaard finishing second and Ty Proctor third after a run off with the impressive Tero Aarnio. The Media Prima Arena track held up very well after the heavy afternoon showers, and provided the good crowd with some excellent racing. Ben Barker struggled with mechanical issues all evening, but otherwise all Bears on display put in some impressive performances. Both Jonas B Andersen and Richard Hall picked up two heat wins on their way to 10 point hauls, whilst Ellis Perks also impressed with his 7 point total.
Bears asset Jacob Bukhave also impressed with 9 points, and will surely have made some promoters sit up and take note with his performance. It was a successful night overall, with the Bears next in action next Thursday against a Russ Hodgson select side which includes the likes of Richard Lawson and Thomas Jorgensen.

Julie Lewis Memorial Preview – Thursday 30th March – 7:30pm start
The new speedway season is finally upon us, and the SG Petch Bears start their season with the annual Julie Lewis Memorial meeting, in memory of former office manager from both Cleveland Park and the Media Prima Arena, Julie Lewis.
This year sees a slight change to the format, with the meeting returning to a senior event with a 16 man field to be raced over 20 heats. There will be no semi finals or finals, with the top scorer after the 20 heats the winner. If there are any ties, then a run off will take place. Fans are advised that the meeting will start at 7:30pm sharp, with the parade taking place at 7:20.
It has been a busy winter for the Bears, with Brian Havelock leaving and Kevin Keay taking over the reins. Bears team manager Jitendra Duffill has also taken a larger role within the club, and he cannot wait for the season to get started:
“I always planned on putting together a side that could challenge for silverware and just as importantly a side that would entertain. I honestly believe that we have achieved that and I know that if the fans get behind us we will see some of the most exciting speedway in the country. Redcar is a great club and one that is very close to my heart…..I feel that there are some very good times ahead of us and the atmosphere surrounding the club at the moment is unreal.”
The lineup for the meeting is certainly an exciting one, with 5 of the Bears competing against a number of ex-Bears and riders putting themselves in the shop window for a team place. Unfortunately Charles Wright is riding for his parent club Somerset, and popular German Tobias Busch has an ice speedway meeting and will both be missing. With the likes of Aaron Summers, Ty Proctor and Ulrich Ostergaard all competing it is sure to be a exciting meeting which Duffill is certainly looking forward to:
“This meeting and next week’s challenge against the Russ Hodgson Select will be good practice for our boys. There will be no pressure on any of them but I know that they are all riders who want to win every race they take part in so I don’t expect any of them to be taking things easy. Our boys won’t have it easy though as the field is full of riders with a lot of experience around the Media Prima Arena and I’m expecting a very close and exciting contest. I’d love to see a Bear on top of the rostrum so please get behind our boys and make some noise.”
