REDCAR retained the Tyne-Tees Trophy after a dramatic 46-44 last heat success over a Newcastle Diamonds select side. 

The final heat saw Jason Edwards, and Charles Wright, who went through the card with a 15 point maximum, needing a 5-1 for the Bears to win, and the pair duly delivered to the delight of the home crowd. Lewi Kerr top scored with paid 11 for Newcastle. 

The “Agilia” Bears started in scintillating fashion as Charles Wright won comfortably whilst Jake Mulford showed superb form (in his first appearance in the main body of the side) to comfortably take 2nd and Redcar had a maximum advantage to begin 2025. 

However, the Diamonds hit back in heat two as Alfie Bowtell won in serene fashion, but with Bears debutant Tom Spencer keeping away from Newcastle’s Danny Phillips, George English’s side had to settle for a 4-2 heat advantage which cut Redcar’s lead to two points.

Danny King opened his account with a big heat win, whilst Jason Edwards used his ECCO Arena knowledge to hold off the hard charging Simon Lambert for 2nd which extended Redcar’s lead to six points on Teesside. 

The visitors emphatically hit back in heat four as Lewi Kerr took the chequered flag, and with Alfie Bowtell riding well to hold off Redcar guest Dan Gilkes, the meeting was looking much more even at 13-11 to the Bears. 

Heat five was full of drama throughout, after three attempts to finish the race. Firstly, Steve Worrall demolished the tapes in the opening staging which saw the Diamonds 2012 KO Cup winner replaced by the undefeated Alfie Bowtell. The second staging saw Bowtell take out King with Bowtell excluded. 

The third and final staging saw Ben Barker gate, but King quickly hit the dirt and took the lead, and, to the joy of the large crowd, Edwards used the outside line to pass Barker on the final lap to take the paid win and send Redcar back into a four point lead. 

Redcar’s lead was stretched to six points as the red-hot Wright took another chequered flag, and with Mulford in a comfortable 3rd, Redcar had a 22-14 advantage. 

Nevertheless, the Diamonds immediately hit back to halve the deficit in heat seven. Simon Lambert took the win, and with Dan Gilkes hitting the deck (whilst in 2nd) whilst trying to pass Lambert for the win on the final band, Connor Mountain took 2nd and Newcastle were back in with a shout. 

The first shared heat of 2025 saw Newcastle’s Ben Barker win with ease, but with Jake Mulford and Ace Pijper (scoring his debut point in Redcar colours) packing the minor placings, Redcar still had the upper hand in the battle for the Tyne-Tees Trophy. 

Heat nine saw Kerr stretch his legs to record an impressive heat win, and with the win, he ended both Edwards and King’s maximum hopes, but with Phillips at the back, the gap remained at four points on opening night. 

Heat 10 saw more drama as Mulford broke the tapes in the first staging, and he was excluded from the re-run. Remarkably, the next two attempts to stage the race saw Mulford’s replacement, Tom Spencer hit the deck on the first turn which saw both races stopped. The final staging saw Wright cruise to another win, but with Spencer at the back, Newcastle were still within touching distance of the Bears. 

Newcastle emphatically hit back in heat 11 as Barker won comfortably, and with Worrall coming to the party in 2nd, the Diamonds had levelled in their attempts to regain the Tyne-Tees Trophy. 

Heat 12 saw Newcastle take the lead for the first time as Lambert passed Edwards to win, and with Bowtell 3rd, Newcastle fans could see a trophy in their midst. Heat 13 saw Wright continue immaculately to win again, but with Gilkes 4th, Redcar remained two behind. 

Heat 14 saw another shared race as King won, but with Bowtell holding off a spirited effort from Spencer, the Diamonds had a two point advantage heading into the final race. 

The final race saw breathtaking drama as Wright completed his full maximum, but Edwards rode with remarkable skill and maturity to hold off Worrall and Kerr to hand Redcar a 46-44 win and the Tyne-Tees Trophy.

REDCAR star Jason Edwards cannot wait to begin another year as a Bear, with the Brit keen to lay down a marker when Redcar take on a Newcastle Diamonds select tomorrow night at the ECCO Arena with tapes up at 7:30pm.

Edwards, who is back for his 4th year in Redcar colours said, “We need to start well and lay down a marker, you must start as you mean to go on and it all starts for us tomorrow night.”

The 22 year old knows improvement throughout the septet will be the key if Redcar are to challenge for silverware this season. Edwards said, “ It’s up to me and Jake (Mulford) to push the heat leaders and for the reserves to push me and Jake, if we can all improve that will be the key to a winning team.”

‘The Billericay Blaster’ believes the Tyne-Tees Trophy clash is the perfect preparation for Redcar’s tilt at the BSN Series. Edwards said, “ Competitive laps are what we need at this stage of the season, it’ll be good to get together tomorrow as a 1-7 and it will be great preparation for the Scunthorpe match in the BSN series next week.”

Edwards, who begins 2025 at number three for Redcar, got some valuable extra laps in last Friday at the ECCO Arena. Edwards said, “Well, it was beneficial for me, Jake (Mulford) and Tom (Spencer) who all practised. The track was brilliant, we got to try some different things and test ahead of tomorrow.”

The British starlet knows the visitors will be a tough test for the Bears. Edwards said, “ The Newcastle meeting gives us the opportunity to test some different things and they have a solid side, which makes it a good test for us at the start of our season.”

The Bears will be without Erik Riss who continues his recovery from a shoulder injury suffered at Workington with the German hoping to return to action next week. The Redcar management have drafted in 2024 Bear Dan Gilkes as a guest replacement.

The Diamonds select will be led by George English with all of the visiting septet having previous association with Newcastle.

The visitors are led at number one by Steve Worrall who rode superbly in last weekend’s Championship League Riders Championship whilst extra firepower comes in the shape of Lewi Kerr, Ben Barker and Simon Lambert. The remaining Diamonds stars include the exciting Ben Barker, Middlesbrough skipper Danny Phillips and Plymouth’s Alfie Bowtell.

CHRIS ‘Bomber’ Harris secured his maiden Championship League Riders Championship (CLRC) at Scunthorpe yesterday. Both Bears battled hard with Charles Wright finishing 4th in the final whilst Danny King lost out on countback to Ben Barker for a semi-final place.

The final saw Wright struggle to settle on the start line, and when the tapes rose, the skipper was last out of the gate and could not find a way into the race. Harris passed his Glasgow teammate Kyle Howarth (who finished 2nd to secure a Glasgow 1-2) on the opening lap for the win, whilst the returning Steve Worrall rode impressively throughout the day to finish 3rd. 

After Ben Barker took an impressive win in heat one, Redcar’s Danny King started his bid for glory with a 3rd place in heat two as Scunthorpe’s own Steve Worrall took the win from Sam Masters in 2nd. 

Heat three saw Poole’s Richard Lawson take the chequered flag with heat four seeing Wright begin his title charge. What followed was a superb race as Workington’s Antti Vuolas tussled with Wright for the lead throughout the race until Harris produced a mesmerising double pass on the run to the line to start with a win. 

After Drew Kemp and Chris Harris won heats five and six respectively, both Bears were back out on track in heat seven. The seventh race saw King take a tapes to flag win, and with Wright in 2nd, the large travelling contingent had plenty to cheer.

Heats eight and nine saw Worrall continue his unbeaten start with a win whilst Howarth took his first chequered flag in his 2nd outing. Heat 10 saw Wright take his 3rd ride, but when the skipper struggled from the gate, things did not look rosy for the skipper. However, Wright showed superb speed to pass Simon Lambert and Jake Allen respectively for another 2nd place to take his tally to five points from three rides. 

After Worrall claimed another win in heat 11, King was out in back to back races, with very different fortunes! The 2016 British Champion ran a last in heat 12 but gave himself hope with a scintillating heat 13 win over Harris who benefitted from Kemp retiring whilst the Bandit was 2nd.

Worrall secured his place in the final with a 4th successive win in heat 14 whilst Justin Sedgmen took his total to five points with a heat 15 success. Wright boosted his qualification hopes with a brilliant heat 16 win as he cutback under Howarth on bend two of the final lap for 1st, which took the captain’s total to eight points from four rides. 

Wright continued his impressive form as he performed a vintage pass to lower Worrall’s colours which secured a minimum semi-final spot. Heat 18 saw King’s hopes take a major blow with the Brit finishing 3rd to end on eight points, leaving him waiting to see if he had qualified. 

Heat 19 saw Howarth secure a semi-final spot with a superb win over Vuolas but heat 20 saw heartache for King as Barker won to qualify for the semi-final on countback, but with Harris 4th, Wright had qualified in the top two for the final. 

The last chance semi-final saw Howarth win, whilst Harris eventually got the better of Lawson for 2nd to ensure Glasgow would have a representative in the final. 

The final saw Wright struggle to settle at the tapes, and when the tapes rose, Wright could not make an impact on the top three. Meanwhile, in the battle for the chequered flag, Harris passed Howarth and held on impressively for the title, to the delight of the travelling Glasgow fans.

REDCAR co-promoter Jamie Swales sees no reason why one of the Bears trio cannot make it a perfect weekend ahead of today’s Championship League Riders Championship (CLRC) at Scunthorpe. 

The Redcar trio of Charles Wright, Erik Riss and Danny King are set to battle it out against the best of the Cab Direct Championship at the Eddie Wright Raceway with tapes up at 3pm. 

After a memorable pairs success less than 24 hours ago, Swales is in a confident mood ahead of the second major event in as many days. Swales said, “ There’s no reason why we can’t go and get another trophy. I don’t think there is an outstanding home track advantage for anybody and all three of our boys are more than capable.”

Swales also believes a gold medal today could be another “shot in the arm” for Redcar. Swales said, “ One of the big advantages of running this meeting at the start of the year is that a win can give a rider and the club a real shot in the arm ahead of the Bears meetings.”

The former rider turned promoter believes his three charges are well-equipped to challenge. Swales explained, “ Danny (King) is in good form, and don’t forget, he won the Ben Fund at Scunthorpe in 2020. Erik (Riss) has top scored for us at Scunthorpe before and Charles (Wright) is always in the mix around there.

Swales also reserved special praise for the club’s travelling support, with another large contingent expected to descend on Lincolnshire this afternoon. Swales said, “ The support we had yesterday was superb and I expect another big Bears turnout today. The fans always travel in numbers and do us proud and it really does make a difference for the riders.”

Overall, Swales expects a top class meeting with the standard of riders on show. Swales said, “ I think it’s going to be a great meeting, regardless of the outcome as Scunthorpe is a track that always provides fantastic racing.”

The meeting is another wide-open, star studded field with the likes of Poole’s Richard Lawson, Oxford’s Sam Masters and Glasgow’s Chris Harris bidding for early season individual glory.

The final saw the Bears take on Poole but it was not without drama! With the Bears sitting on a 6-3 advantage in the early stages of the race, Lewis Kerr and Erik Riss crashed, leaving both on the deck and with Kerr excluded, the Bears were tantalisingly close to more silverware. 

The re-run saw Riss pass Zach Cook, and with Charles Wright sat in 3rd, Redcar secured a 6-3 win, which gave the Bears their third pairs success in four years. 

Redcar began the meeting against Poole in heat 4, with the Pirates flying from the tapes for a resounding 7-2 success, leaving Redcar with work to do. 

Redcar recorded their first heat advantage against Scunthorpe in heat 8 as Riss battled past Steve Worrall for the win, and with Wright in 3rd place, the reigning champions had a 6-3 advantage to get the Teessiders moving in the right direction.  

Heat 11 saw another battle, this time against Oxford as the impressive Riss showed grit and determination to pass Sam Masters on the run to the line, and with Wright again in an important 3rd place, Redcar were on the right track heading into the final qualification heat. 

The final qualifying race saw Redcar pitted against the hosts, Workington with Wright and Riss knowing another hea advantage was required for qualification. Despite Voulas taking an early lead, Wright reeled in the Finn to take the chequered flag, and with Riss in 3rd, Redcar had secured a semi-final berth by qualifying in 4th place. 

The semi-final saw Redcar pitted against Glasgow, who topped the score charts over 18 heats. However, the Bears completely ripped up the script and struck a 7-2 success to put down a marker ahead of the final. 

The second semi-final saw Poole take a 6-3 success over a valiant Plymouth side, setting up a repeat of the 2022 final, when Kerr was in Redcar colours!

The final saw Lewi Kerr take an early lead with Riss and Wright packing the minor places, however, Riss had the speed and passed Kerr on the third bend of the opening lap when Kerr collided with the Redcar heat leader, leaving the referee with a decision to make. After a short look at the footage, Wayne Jarvis excluded Kerr from the re-run. 

The re-run saw Zach Cook gate with most onlookers expecting Riss and Wright to settle for a 5-4 heat advantage. However, Riss was determined to end the meeting in style as he passed Cook for the win, and with Wright in an untroubled 3rd, Redcar had the title again, much to the delight of their amazing travelling support.

REDCAR boss Gavin Parr has urged Charles Wright & Erik Riss to start the “Agilia” Bears campaign with a bang tomorrow.

The two heat leaders travel to Workington with the aim of defending the club’s Pairs title with the first major event of the campaign getting underway at 3pm at the GT Tyres Arena. 

Parr, who masterminded Redcar’s pairs success back in 2022 and again in 2024, is hoping tomorrow’s event can be the springboard for a memorable 2025. Parr said, “I know tomorrow is only a pairs event but if the guys can go out and win the title, the confidence will spread through the rest of the team and things could just snowball for us across the campaign.”

Parr knows that the competition is a special event for himself and the club, “It all started for me in the pairs when Jade (Mudgway) was on holiday. The competition has been really good for me and the club, with two wins and a second place over the last three years.“

The cycle speedway star has also paid tribute to the club’s loyal fanbase with in excess of 50 fans expected to descend on Cumbria. Parr said “ The supporters club have done a great job, it started off as a minibus and now we have a 53 seater. It’s absolutely fantastic.”

Parr knows that tactics will play a huge part, with the team boss keen to point out the need to avoid 7-2 defeats. Parr said, “ It’s so important to avoid 7-2 results and not have any last places. It’s no use having one rider going unbeaten so I will be reminding the boys of that.”

Parr continued, “Also, you’ve got to remember that 2nd and 3rd place is better than winning the race so we will be emphasising that to Erik (Riss) as it’s his first pairs event for the Bears”

Despite the Bears looking strong, Parr believes it’s a wide open event, “ We have as good a chance as anybody but there are some really good sides racing. Glasgow will be a threat as will Workington on home shale. Also, Plymouth, with Nicolai Klindt and Ben Barker are dark horses for the event.”

A star studded line-up has been assembled for tomorrow, with the aforementioned Nicolai Klindt making his return to second tier racing as a Plymouth Gladiator. 

Additionally, Glasgow track their captain Chris Harris and Kyle Howarth with 2024 treble winners Poole being represented by ex-Bear Lewi Kerr and their skipper, Zach Cook. Six time pairs winners Workington are represented by their Australian duo Troy Bathcelor and Tate Zischke.

RETURNING Redcar star Danny King believes the Bears fans have yet to see his best level on a consistent basis, with the 38 year old keen to show more this season. 

King said, “I think I’ve shown what I can do in glimpses but I’ve not been as consistent as I should be. 2024 was a bit of a write off really, I had my injury and then I returned at less than 100% but as of now, I’m as close to 100% as I can be, I don’t think I’ll ever be at full fitness as I’m getting older but after my first practice my hand felt good which was really pleasing.”

The Bears man admits he was always likely to stay at the ECCO Arena in 2025, with the Brit keen to stay somewhere he is settled. 

King said, “I know I have rode for a lot of clubs but that’s because of how long I have been riding! I like to be settled and I only move if there’s no other option. You only have to look at my time at Ipswich, I’m set for my 16th season there and I think that shows my loyalty.”

After the “Agilia” Bears slow start in 2024, the former British Champion believes Redcar will benefit from five of the side’s riders having multiple ROWE Motor Oil Premiership meetings before the Bears season kicks into gear. 

King said, “The busier you are on the bike, the better, so we won’t have any excuses when we get underway in the Cab Direct Championship. We will be race fit and ready to hit the ground running, and we need to as this has to be our year.”

King, who accrued a 7.69 average in 2024, is excited about the potential strength of the Bears. King said, ” I’ve said it a few times, I like the way the team has been built, I think we have a good mix of youth and experience. I love the fact that Jake (Mulford) has followed in Jason’s (Edwards) footsteps, Jason was a reserve a couple of years ago and now he is established in the main body and pushing for a heat leader spot.”

King, whose career began back in 2001, is happy to see how Mulford and Edwards have listened to advice, with King a key figure in the “Agilia” Bears pits. King said, ” I copy what happened to me at the start of my career really, and if I can help push our two new reserves in the right direction then that will help us throughout the season.”

Supporters are reminded that the club’s annual press and practice day takes place this Sunday with gates opening at 12pm to the public with riders expected to take to the track at 1pm. 

REDCAR star Jason Edwards admits it was a “no-brainer” for him to return to the ECCO Arena in
2025 as the rising British star prepares for his fourth season in “Agilia” Bears colours.

Edwards, who has won league titles in the ROWE Motor Oil Premiership and the WSRA
National League, admits he is settled and sees no reason to move on from Redcar.

Edwards said, ” It’s a no-brainer to be back with Redcar, I don’t want to be anywhere else and I
got my wish to be back in Redcar colours.

The likeable 22 year old is keen to build on his recent improvements in 2025, with the Bears
man aiming to hit a 7.5 average in the Cab Direct Championship this season.

He said, “We had a team practice at Scunthorpe around a week ago which went really well.
With Charles (Wright), Danny (King), and Erik (Riss) in the team, I can hopefully learn even
more from them which should help me improve as a rider and increase my average.”

The Redcar middle order man thinks the Bears possess the strongest top three in the Cab
Direct Championship in 2025, especially with the heat leaders’ experience on second tier
tracks.

Edwards said, “It’s good to have Erik back with us, he’s a very good Championship rider which
he proved when he guested for us a few times last season.

“In my opinion, our top three are the strongest on British tracks, quite a few of the other clubs

tracks.”

‘The Billericay Blaster’ admits that if the Bears are to win their second piece of team silverware,
this is their best chance. Edwards explained, “I genuinely think that if we are going to win a
trophy, 2025 is our best opportunity to do so with the side we have put together.”

The fourth year Bear believes the Cab Direct Championship will be a closely fought battle in
2025.

Edwards said, “Poole are always going to be there or thereabouts, they always build their team
slightly differently each year and it seems to work.

“Across the league, there are a lot of teams who could have a really good season but it does
depend on a few riders hitting the heights on a regular basis.”
