The Middlesbrough “Heat Floors” Tigers narrowly missed out to the Edinburgh Monarchs Academy 44-46 in a last heat decider at the ECCO Arena. The Tigers looked to have secured a super heat as Ben Trigger and Danny Phillips led for much of heat 15 until Phillips suffered a puncture, allowing the Monarchs guest, Jacob Clouting through for 2nd to secure the win for Edinburgh. Ben Trigger top scored for the hosts with a faultless 15 point maximum whilst Jacob Clouting and Dayle Wood both struck 10 for Edinburgh. 

The match started as Jake Mulford took a serene tapes to flag win, but with Kai Ward struggling out of the gate, the Tigers could not take an early lead. The reserves race saw Ben Rathbone take a comfortable win, but with Will Hocaniuk falling at the back, he was unable to reel in Edinburgh’s Mark Parker, Middlesbrough remained level on Teesside. 

Edinburgh then broke the deadlock in heat three as the ever impressive third tier visitor Dayle Wood took the win, and with Sam McGurk in 3rd, the Academy had the early advantage. Trigger opened his account with a heat four success but despite Hocaniuk’s best efforts, he was unable to reel in Max Perry and it was another shared heat at the ECCO Arena. 

Heat five saw Edinburgh extend their advantage as Freddy Hodder rounded both Tigers out of the second bend, and with Clouting third, the visitors were four ahead with the Tigers staring down the barrel of the wooden spoon. However, Middlesbrough immediately reduced the deficit to two points as Mulford took another comfortable win, and with Ward in an important third, the Tigers had their first heat advantage. 

After Trigger took the chequered flag in a shared heat seven, the Academy struck a seismic blow in heat eight as Clouting and Kyran Lyden combined to take the first 5-1 of the match to stretch their lead to six points. Nevertheless, the Tigers kept battling as the impressive Danny Phillips took a heat win, and with the Middlesbrough guest Kieran Douglas bagging third, the hosts were within snapping distance of Edinburgh. 

After a pair of shared heats won by Trigger and Mulford respectively, Middlesbrough hit another 4-2 in heat 12 as Phillips saw off McGurk for the win, and with Hocaniuk looking good in 3rd, the Tigers were within two of Edinburgh. However, ahead of heat 13 the Tigers were dealt a blow with Mulford unable to take his place in the race. The race saw Trigger take another superb win, but with Hocaniuk falling after a tangle with Perry, Edinburgh still had a slender advantage. 

The penultimate race of the match saw Wood win, and with Lyden passing Douglas on the opening lap, the Monarchs had a four point advantage heading into heat 15. The final heat saw Trigger and Wood battle it out on the opening lap, but Wood then hit the deck and was excluded from the re-run. The re-run saw Trigger and Phillips both gate with the match seemingly set for a superheat, however, Phillips suffered terrible luck with a puncture at the end of lap three which gave Clouting second and the Monarchs the away win.

Middlesbrough “Heat Floors” Tigers number one Jake Mulford has challenged himself and his Tigers teammates to “sign off in style”. Middlesbrough take to the shale for the final time this season tomorrow night as they host the Edinburgh Monarchs Academy with tapes up at 7:30 at the ECCO Arena. 

The Redcar reserve tasted major World Championship success by winning the World Under 23 Long Track Title last week and now he wants to end his speedway season on another high, “ Tomorrow’s match is our last meeting of the campaign so it would be good if we can sign off in style and finish on a real high.”

Mulford, who will ride in his final ever WSRA National League match tomorrow is happy with how he has performed, “ It’s been a really good year for me in the National League. Racing in this division has been good for me, it’s a shame it’s our last match but it’s been a good season.”

The “Heat Floors” Tigers star has been impressed with the improvement from his teammates this season, “ Will (Hocaniuk) has really stood out to me with his improvement but everyone has progressed which is the most important thing.”

As touched upon, due to British Speedway’s rules on the WSRA National League (any rider who achieves a four point average in a professional league cannot race in the 3rd tier),  Middlesbrough’s last match of the season will also mark Mulford’s last appearance in the competition. 

The fast improving Brit has been grateful for the opportunity to race for the Tigers but is happy to be progressing in the sport, “ It’s a shame that I can’t ride in this league anymore but it is a good achievement as it shows that I have improved which is a real positive for me.”

The new World Under 23 Long Track Champion also took time to reflect on his major success, “Yesterday was the first time I have sat down and thought about it. It’s a really good achievement for me and I’m hoping I can carry that form onto tomorrow.”

Middlesbrough have called upon the services of Kieran Douglas who guests in place of Jamie Halder who has work commitments. Otherwise, the Tigers side are as per programme with Will Hocaniuk looking to back up his recent 2nd place finish in the British Youth Championships 500cc class with another strong performance from reserve. 

Meanwhile, the Edinburgh Academy draft in Belle Vue Colts Freddy Hodder to guest at number one for Connor Coles who is on Cab Direct Championship duty. The visitors also track Jacob Clouting at number two for rib injury victim Mason Watson. Many observers will also be keeping a close eye on the Academy’s number seven Kyran Lyden, Lyden is a local lad who has done many laps around the ECCO Arena.

Redcar team manager Gavin Parr has hailed the line-up for the prestigious Championship League Riders Championship (CLRC) as “one for the ages”. The “Agilia” Bears promotion are preparing to host another blue riband event tomorrow afternoon with tapes up at 3pm at the ECCO Arena. 

The meeting is a major event and as such, has major names including British legends Chris Harris and Scott Nicholls whilst the in-form Josh Pickering is sure to be a threat. Additionally, Troy Batchelor has impressed around the ECCO Arena this season whilst Richard Lawson will be hoping to cap his testimonial year with major individual silverware. However, the home support will be cheering on the current CLRC champion Charles Wright whilst Danny King will be looking to improve on his 4th place finish in last year’s event. 

The Newcastle born boss is excited with the field of stellar names assembled and is looking forward to the riders going handlebar to handlebar, “ The line-up means we basically have 22 heat 13’s to look forward to. The field looks really good on paper, it’s a testimony to the club for getting such a showpiece event and it should be a great spectacle. Additionally, the weather looks to be on our side too so it should be a fantastic day and a great meeting.”

Redcar will be represented by the current CLRC champion Charles Wright and British stalwart Danny King and Parr has revealed both Bears are up for the challenge. Parr said, “ Both Charles and Danny are confident, they have been in good form around Redcar and there is no reason why both of them can’t be in and amongst the challengers when we get to the latter stages.”

Parr has also urged supporters to come and cheer on from the terraces with several British champions and international stars on show, “ Officially we have the best 16 riders (who are available) racing and it would be great to see fans from up and down the country come out and support the event. The meeting means a lot to the riders and they want the title. People would be mad to stay at home, get yourself along to the ECCO Arena for some superb speedway.”

Season ticket holders are reminded that this meeting is a shared event and thus is not part of their season ticket package.

Redcar’s KO Cup dreams were ended despite a spectacular second leg comeback to rescue a 45-45 draw on the night. The Cheetahs led 41-31 with 3 heats remaining, thus securing their progression to the final but the Bears fought back in slightly bizarre circumstances to ensure their season did not end in a home defeat. Despite the late revival, Oxford took a relatively comfortable 85-95 aggregate success. Charles Wright (9+1) and Jason Edwards (7+3) both struck paid 10 for Redcar whilst Ashton Boughen hit a stunning 15 point maximum for Oxford. 

The opening heat was a superb race as Dan Gilkes impressively gated for a fairly comfortable win. However, all eyes were on the race for second as Sam Masters locked up exiting bend 2 of the final lap with Wright sensing an opportunity for a 5-1. However, Wright misjudged bend 3 which let Luke Killeen through to give Oxford a shared opening race. 

After a shared heat two won by Jake Mulford, Ashton Boughen started his evening in superb style with a comfortable win, but with his partner Jacob Hook last, the second leg remained all square. The Bears took the lead for the first time in heat four as King used all his experience to beat Scott Nicholls, and with Mulford in 3rd, Redcar had reduced the aggregate deficit to eight points. 

However, the Cheetahs stamped their authority on proceedings with a 5-1 as Masters won from the gate, and with Oxford’s rider replacement Scott Nicholls seeing off Jason Edwards, the Cheetahs had a 12 point aggregate lead. Oxford then doubled their advantage as the red-hot Nicholls took another win after a fierce battle with Wright, and with Killeen passing Gilkes for 3rd, the Bears were left with a mountain to climb. 

The visitors continued their run of heat advantages as Boughen rode a wonderful opening bend for the win, and with Hook in an important 3rd ahead of Danny Phillips, the tie was beginning to slip away from Redcar. Heat eight saw the unstoppable Boughen round both Bears on the opening bend for another chequered flag, and with Killeen 3rd ahead of Mulford, the Cheetahs were in charge. 

Redcar stopped the visitors’ run of heat advantages in heat nine, but with Nicholls taking the win in a shared heat, Redcar’s hopes of a place in the KO Cup final were fading fast. Heat ten saw Boughen take another win, this time over Wright, but with Hook last, Oxford had to settle for a shared race. Heat 11 represented Redcar’s last chance in terms of qualification, but there was pre-race drama as Phillips had machinery problems on the start line and was replaced with Mulford. The heat saw Masters win the race in a shared heat, meaning the Cheetahs had booked their spot in the final against Poole. 

Boughen completed his first ever second tier maximum with a fifth chequered flag in heat 12, and with Jody Scott 3rd, Oxford led by 10 on the night and had set their sights on an away win. Nevertheless, Redcar kept on battling and after King and Wright got the better of Masters (who then shed a chain), the Bears had a 5-1 and still had hopes of a second leg success. 

Heat 14 saw Edwards take an impressive win, but with Mulford unable to reel in Scott, it appeared the Cheetahs had won the match. However, in bizarre circumstances, Oxford boss Peter Schroek had made an error as having already replaced Scott for Hook, he was ineligible for the race meaning he was disqualified and Mulford was awarded 3rd, which meant the Bears still had an opportunity for a 45-45 draw. 

The final race of the evening saw Wright win, and with Edwards riding superbly to cutback on Masters for 2nd, Redcar had rescued a second leg draw.

Redcar co-promoter Jamie Swales has challenged his Bears side to “spoil the party” and overcome a 10 point deficit to make the Cab Direct Championship KO Cup Final. The Bears host the Cheetahs tomorrow night at the ECCO Arena with tapes up at 7:30. 

Despite a first leg defeat, Swales knows his side have the capabilities to do the job, ” It’s far from over, we performed better last night in comparison to the league match at Oxford and all the pressure is on the Cheetahs, their supporters will be expecting them to go through so it’s our job to go out and spoil the party.”

The exuberant co-promoter was happy with Dan Gilkes’ return to Bears colours with the Brit hitting paid 6, ” Dan didn’t have too long out and sometimes a little rest can recharge the batteries. Dan was trapping well and gave Scotty (Nicholls) a scare in heat 15 so if he can produce more of that on Friday, that will help us.”

The former rider also heaped praise on the ever improving Jake Mulford who backed up a good display at Glasgow with another paid double figure score at Oxford, ” Jake made some smart first bends last night and he’s going really well at the moment.”

Swales also issued a rallying cry to the Bears fans ahead of tomorrow night, ” We need as many people there as possible, being as loud as they can and cheering the boys on. Without the fans it will not be possible.”

Redcar are forced into a change at reserve for the meeting with Ben Trigger on Polish duty with the Bears promotion drafting in Middlesbrough skipper Danny Phillips, with Swales keen to offer opportunities to the club’s ‘junior’ riders, ” If we are going to run in the 3rd tier then we should be offering opportunities to Middlesbrough riders when the situation allows. When we looked at what was available, Danny was the best option as he has done well enough to deserve a chance. Danny has beaten William Cairns twice around the ECCO Arena recently so hopefully he can get amongst the points tomorrow night.”

Alongside Phillips, Jye Etheridge continues to deputise for Connor Bailey whilst Danny King is set to battle on despite suffering from soreness after his heat 13 crash at Oxford. Meanwhile, the Cheetahs are sweating on the fitness of Jordan Jenkins after the Brit’s horror crash last night. If Jenkins is unavailable, rider replacement will operate in his absence at number 2. The visitors once again offer another opportunity to Jody Scott who replaces the injured Adam Roynon.

Oxford struck the first blow in the Cab Direct KO Cup semifinals as they defeated Redcar 50-40 in the first leg at Oxford Stadium. Sam Masters hit an important paid 13 for the hosts whilst the evergreen Charles Wright struck 12 for Redcar. 

The “Agilia” Bears started on the front foot as Charles Wright won from the gate, but with Sam Masters passing Dan Gilkes, Redcar had to settle for a 4-2 in the opening heat. Heat two saw Jake Mulford take an impressive win but with Ben Trigger at the back, the Bears could not build on their early lead. 

However, Oxford showed their mettle with a maximum in heat three as Jordan Jenkins and Ashton Boughen demonstrated their progress in the sport to send the Cheetahs ahead in Oxfordshire. Nevertheless, the Bears hit back to level the tie as Danny King won heat four, and with Mulford in 3rd, Redcar were back on level terms. 

After Wright won a shared heat five, the pendulum once again swung in favour of the hosts as Masters took his first win of the match, and with Cameron Heeps in 3rd, Oxford were two ahead. The hosts then stamped their authority on matters as Jody Scott was shepherded home by Scott Nicholls as the Cheetahs hit their second maximum heat advantage. 

Nevertheless, Redcar kept battling as they recorded another 4-2 as the returning Gilkes took his first win, and with Mulford in an important 3rd, Redcar were within snapping distance at 26-22. However, Oxford are not play-off hopefuls for nothing as Boughen took an impressive victory over King, and with Jenkins 3rd, Oxford once again established a 6 point advantage. 

The Cheetahs then struck a seismic blow as Masters and Heeps combined to get the better of Jye Etheridge and Jason Edwards which gave Oxford a 10 point advantage. 

After a pair of shared heats won by Nicholls and Boughen respectively, Oxford hit another big blow to Redcar’s hopes in heat 13. With the Cheetahs on a 5-1, King hit the deck with the Bears number five hobbling from the track after medical attention. The restaging saw Wright hit the deck with all three riders invited back for the re-run. The third and final staging saw Oxford take a maximum to rub salt into Redcar wounds. 

However, the Bears kept battling and were sat on a 5-1 in heat 14 until Jenkins took a nasty tumble on bend four of the opening lap. The ex-Bear was excluded from the re-run but needed medical attention for a wrist injury. The restaging saw Mulford win, and with Edwards coming to the party in 2nd, Redcar were back within 10 of Oxford. 

The final race of the first leg saw Wright use all his experience to get the better of Masters and Nicholls for the win which set the tie up perfectly for tomorrow’s second leg at the ECCO Arena.

Redcar boss Gavin Parr has challenged his Bears side “to pull off a shock” and overcome the Oxford Cheetahs in the KO Cup semi-finals. The first leg takes place at Oxford Stadium tonight with tapes up at 7:30. 

Parr, who knows his side have the tools to prevail, is mindful of the challenge the “Agilia” Bears face, ” We are under no illusions, Oxford are a great side but I don’t need to drum that into the riders, they know how well they have been doing. We can do the business if we have all seven guys firing at once so let’s go and pull off a shock.”

Parr also heaped praise on Charles Wright with the skipper bouncing back to his usual self after a small blip due to engine issues a few weeks ago, ” Charles had a real sticky spot which was all down to his engines. Charles spent a lot of money on an engine which he cannot get to work properly. It hit him hard and he switched back to his tried and tested engines and we have the Charles of old back. The skipper is also riding with a smile on his face which is a huge part of the sport, if you are a happy rider you will be at your best.”

Parr also focused on the ever improving Jason Edwards who hit another double figure score against Glasgow, ” Jason is just Jason! Everytime he goes out on track he just wants to learn and improve. People forget that he is only 22 and he was fantastic at Glasgow again.”

Redcar have called upon ex-Bear Jye Etheridge as a guest for Connor Bailey and Parr is excited to see what the Australian can bring to the side, ” Jye’s average has dropped into the bracket for him to replace Connor. Jye won the match for Berwick at Redcar which should help at home. Also, Jye is a gater and that’s half the battle at Oxford. He could be a big player for us across both legs.”

Redcar’s slim play-off hopes were officially ended as they fell to a 48-42 away defeat at Glasgow. After heat 2, the Bears led until heat 10 but the Tigers came on strong late in the match to keep their own play-off dreams alive. Chris Harris and Leon Flint were the stars for Glasgow with 13+2 and 12 respectively whilst Charles Wright (13+1) and Jason Edwards (10+1) led Redcar’s challenge. Nevertheless, Redcar did take home the aggregate bonus point for their efforts with a 88-92 success. 

The opening race saw Charles Wright and Danyon Hume make the gate for Redcar but Harris passed both Bears for the win to ensure a shared heat in Scotland. The reserves race saw Glasgow take an early lead as the in-form James Pearson took the win, and with Glasgow’s guest, Tom Spencer 3rd ahead of Ben Trigger, the 2023 Champions had the early initiative. 

However, heat three saw Redcar turn the tables as Hume took a comfortable win, and with Edwards doing well to hold off Anders Rowe, Redcar now had the lead on a must win evening. Heat four saw Jake Mulford and Danny King gate, however, Flint passed both of the Redcar men to take the win, but with Spencer at the back, Redcar’s two point lead remained intact. 

After a shared heat five won by the ever consistent Charles Wright, heat six produced fireworks as Harris passed King for the win but with Trigger passing Jack Smith, the Bears kept their noses in front at Ashfield. 

Flint continued his good start to the meeting with another chequered flag in another shared heat. The run of shared races was ended by the Bears as Edwards won comfortably, and with Mulford in 3rd, Redcar had a four point advantage on away shale. 

Nevertheless, the Tigers immediately brought themselves back within two points of Redcar as Rowe got the better of King, and with Trigger at the back, Glasgow had their second heat advantage. The hosts then took the lead with their first 5-1 of the match as the in-form Pearson took another win, and with Harris 2nd, the Glasgow fans were starting to breathe a little easier. 

Heat 11 saw Wright return to the winners column for the 2nd time, but with Trigger unable to hold off Pearson, Redcar remained two adrift. Glasgow then doubled their lead to four points as Rowe took another heat win, and with Pearson passing Hume, Glasgow were edging closer to a home win. 

Heat 13 saw Harris take the win, and with Flint doing enough to hold onto 3rd ahead of King, Glasgow were six ahead with two races remaining. However, Gavin Parr played his tactical substitute as Wright joined Edwards in heat 14 and the change worked perfectly as Redcar hit a 5-1 to set up a last heat decider at Ashfield. 

The final race saw Glasgow (who deferred their gate selection to heat 15) choose gates 1 & 3. Flint won from the gate, and with Harris getting the better of Wright after a nip and tuck battle, Glasgow secured a six point success on home shale.
