Redcar kept their play-off hopes alive with a 50-40 win over the Workington Comets. Danny King top scored for Redcar with paid 12 whilst Workington’s stand-in skipper, Troy Batchelor struck a fantastic paid 19. All of the Bears side registered at least a paid win in a good team performance whilst the Comets battled well in the absence of their skipper, Craig Cook. 

Batchelor started his evening with a scintillating gate to win heat 1, but with his partner, Ace Pijper at the back, the visitors had to settle for a shared opening heat. The reserves race saw Jake Mulford take a serene win, and with Ben Trigger battling his way past Paul Starke for 2nd, Redcar hit a 5-1 to open an early 4 point cushion. 

Workington struck their first heat advantage in heat 3 as their guest, Jordan Jenkins took the chequered flag, and with Antti Vuolas in 3rd, the Comets halved the deficit. Heat 4 saw Batchelor continue his superb start as he took another heat win, and with Starke benefitting from Mulford having machinery issues to claim 3rd, Workington levelled the tie.

However, Redcar hit back with their second 5-1 of the match to re-establish their 4 point advantage as Jason Edwards and Dan Gilkes combined in the middle order to take a comfortable maximum, much to the delight of the partisan home support. The “Agilia” Bears lead was extended further as Wright lowered Batchelor’s colours to win heat 6 and with Redcar’s guest Danyon Hume in a comfortable 3rd, the hosts had a 6 point advantage. 

After a shared heat 7 won by Danny King, Mulford and Hume rekindled their 2023 heat 8 partnership as they hit another Redcar 5-1 to stretch the side’s lead to 10 points. The ninth race saw the overworked Batchelor take another chequered flag in a shared race whilst heat 10 saw a comfortable win for Charles Wright in the 3rd shared race of the match. 

Batchelor, in his 5th outing of the evening took his 4th win, and with Jenkins in 3rd, the Comets still had hope at 37-29. However, Workington’s hopes were in tatters after heat twelve as Mulford and Gilkes team rode superbly to hold off Vuolas to give Redcar a 12 point advantage with only 3 heats remaining. 

Batchelor took another win in heat 13, but with Pijper at the back, Redcar secured the all important win at the ECCO Arena. Heat 14 saw the impressive Jenkins pass Edwards for the win, and with Starke 3rd for Workington, they secured their 4th heat advantage of the evening. The final race saw an enthralling battle as a fired up King took the win, but with Wright unable to get the better of Jenkins or Batchelor, Redcar had to settle for a 10 point win.

Redcar boss Gavin Parr knows his “Agilia” Bears side cannot afford any more slip-ups ahead of an important Cab Direct Championship weekend. Redcar host the Workington Comets this Friday night with tapes up at 7:30 at the ECCO Arena.

Parr knows his side need to be firing on all cylinders, “If we are going to make the play-offs we will probably need to win our last four matches, starting tomorrow night against Workington. If we are to beat the Comets all seven lads will need to be on their game, something which I don’t think we have had many times this season.”

Despite both sides having secured victories over each other at the ECCO Arena this season, Parr does not believe those early season results will have any bearing on tomorrow’s match, “I don’t think the results against Workington from the early part of the season will have any bearing on tomorrow. At the start of the season we struggled badly but then in the second match against Workington we rode really well and Jonas (Knudsen) probably had his best match for us.”

The Newcastle born team manager knows all about the threats posed by the visitors, “Craig Cook and Troy Batchelor go excellent around our track and so does Antti Vuolas. Workington have also strengthened up by bringing in Paul Starke at reserve and I know it will be a difficult match for us but I’m hoping we can rise to the occasion.”

Parr also explained Charles Wright’s rare off night in Redcar’s last match against Poole, “I spoke to Charles yesterday, his bike just wasn’t right all night against Poole. Charles was very frustrated, his engine had just come back from a service but he was down on power which is rare for Charles.”

The Bears have drafted in 2023 Bear Danyon Hume to guest in place of Connor Bailey. The rest of the Redcar line-up remains unchanged with Jake Mulford looking to continue his recent good form from reserve.

Workington have drafted in ex-Bear Jordan Jenkins to guest for their injured Australian Tate Zischke. The Comets are also without Claus Vissing who is unavailable, and with no facility granted, Ace Pijper steps into the breach. Additionally, Paul Starke is set to make his Workington debut after the former Glasgow man was signed up by the Comets this week.

Middlesbrough suffered their first home defeat of the season as Oxford took a 49-41 success at the ECCO Arena. Jake Mulford hit 10 for the “Heat Floors” Tigers whilst the Oxford guest, William Cairns hit a stunning 14 for the visitors. 

The meeting was a fantastic spectacle for the WSRA National League with plenty of thrilling racing from the emerging talents in the sport with the star being the Chargers guest, William Cairns who showed his undoubted class in the early stages of his burgeoning career. 

Heat 1 saw Luke Killeen take the lead, with the Chargers looking set for a 4-2 until Jake Mulford fell which saw the race stopped and the Middlesbrough number 1 excluded from the re-run. The restaging saw Killeen take a comfortable win, and with Alex Spooner holding off early pressure from Kai Ward, the title chasing Chargers had the perfect start on Teesside. 

The reserves race saw Jacob Clouting touch the tapes with the Oxford reserve going off 15m in the re-run. The re-run saw William Hocaniuk take a superb tapes to flag win, and with Ben Rathbone in 3rd despite strong pressure from Clouting, the Tigers reduced the arrears to 2 points on home shale. 

The third race of a brilliant evening’s entertainment saw Middlesbrough’s Danny Phillips take an impressive win, but with Will Cairns passing Jamie Halder, the Tigers could not take the lead at the ECCO Arena. 

After a shared heat 4 won by Ben Trigger, heat 5 saw Killeen pass Phillips for the win, but with Oxford’s Alex Spooner falling whilst in 3rd, the Chargers could not hit the front as the meeting remained level on Teesside. 

Mulford took his first chequered flag of the evening with a tapes to flag success, but with Ward at the back, there was still no separating the sides. Oxford then hit the front with Cairns taking a stylish win, and with Matt Marson in 3rd, the Chargers had a slender lead. 

The visitors then extended their advantage with an important maximum advantage in heat 8 as Jacob Clouting and Senna Summers rode to a fairly comfortable 5-1 to give Oxford breathing space. However, the Tigers did hit back in heat 9 after a nasty spill for Max Perry (who led when he crashed) in the first staging of the race. The restaging saw Jamie Halder take the win, but with Clouting passing Phillips on lap 3, Middlesbrough had to settle for a 4-2 heat advantage. 

However, Oxford’s 6 point lead was re-established after the brilliant Cairns defeated Mulford for another heat win, and with Marson in 3rd, the visitors had the impetus heading into the last 5 heats. Oxford’s lead was extended to 8 points after another great race as Killeen and Trigger tussled for the lead in a closely contested race, but with Killeen coming out on top and Spooner in 3rd, the Chargers had full control on away shale. 

The Chargers lead was stretched to 10 points as Marson took his first win, and with Summers 3rd, Middlesbrough had a mountain to climb. Heat 13 saw Middlesbrough record a much needed heat advantage as Mulford took an impressive win, and with Trigger passing Perry for 3rd, the hosts still had a mathematical chance of forcing a super heat with 2 races remaining. 

However, Middlesbrough’s slim hopes were emphatically ended by Cairns in heat 14 as he took another masterful win, but with the Tigers packing into the minor placings, Oxford could not extend their lead. The final race saw Mulford and Trigger gate until Cairns passed Trigger on the backstraight of the opening lap and then snooped under Mulford on bend 3 to take another win on a night to remember for the 15 year old.

Middlesbrough “Heat Floors” Tigers star, Jake Mulford has challenged his Tigers teammates to remain undefeated at home, despite thinking tomorrow night’s test will be the toughest his side have faced at the ECCO Arena this season. Middlesbrough host the Oxford Chargers with tapes up at 7:30 this Friday. 

Supporters are also reminded that there are 2 classes of the British Youth Championship taking place. Firstly, the 125cc youth class take to the shale at 7pm with 5 heats of action. Finally, after the WSRA National League clash, the 500cc youth clash will take place with a 10 heat second half spectacle. 

Mulford, who has a 8.14 WSRA National League average this season, knows his side will be in for a tough test tomorrow evening, “ I think the Chargers will be our toughest test so far, especially with Oxford tracking William Cairns as a guest. However, I’m sure if we stick together as a team then we will be okay.”

The Redcar reserve is thankful that he chose to join the Tigers in the early stages of the season. Mulford said : “ Riding for the Tigers is very important for my development. The more time I can get on the bike, the better it is for me.”

Mulford also reserved special praise for Ben Rathbone after his 9 point haul in Middlesbrough’s last home fixture, “ Ben really upped his game against Sheffield and he did really well. I think he has invested more money into his equipment and in that meeting, it showed.”

The “Heat Floors” Tigers number five also sent a message to the club’s promotion about his plans beyond 2024, “ I’d like a two year deal at Redcar. Everyone around the club has been helping me quite a lot recently and I have a good relationship with the promotion.”

Mulford is also hoping that he and his Cab Direct Championship reserve partner, Ben Trigger can bring more of their Bears form onto the track for the Tigers, “ The later heats of Tigers meetings haven’t really been going to plan recently as we haven’t scored as many points as we would have liked to score. If we can start becoming more consistent in the later heats then that can be the difference makers for the side.”

Middlesbrough track a full strength 1-7 with the aforementioned Ben Rathbone looking to improve on his 9 point haul he managed against Sheffield. However, the Chargers, who currently occupy 2nd place in the table are forced into two changes to their septet. Jason Garrad is on Cab Direct Championship duty with Glasgow and the Chargers promotion have drafted in Matt Marson as a guest. The Chargers second change is an intriguing one as they have brought in Belle Vue Colts William Cairns to guest in place of the injured Ashton Vale with Cairns one of the hottest young prospects in world speedway. The Chargers skipper, Luke Killeen is also sure to provide stern opposition for the Tigers.

Poole staged a late comeback to secure a 49-41 away win against the Redcar “Agilia” Bears. Redcar led for the majority of the meeting until a Pirates tactical substitute turned the tide to gain all 3 Cab Direct Championship points on offer. Ben Cook hit a scintillating paid 17 for the Pirates whilst Danny King hit 9 for Redcar. 

Before the start of the meeting, Pirates reserve Vinnie Foord suffered an alarming crash on his parade lap which put pay to his first choice of machinery for the night. After a short delay for fence repairs, Poole’s Richard Lawson opened his account for the evening with a win, and with Tobias Thomsen in 3rd, the 2022 league champions had a heat advantage to start their night. 

Heat 2 saw more bad luck strike for Foord as he tangled with Mulford on the opening bend and once again hit the deck. However, this time it would be the end of hia evening as he withdrew due to a nasty looking shoulder injury. The re-run saw Redcar gate on a 5-1 until Sam Hagon made an imperious inside pass on Ben Trigger at the start of lap 2 to ensure Poole did not fall behind, but with Mulford taking an impressive win, the meeting was level at 6-6. 

Redcar then hit the front for the first time as Gilkes took an impressive win, and with the Redcar guest, Jordan Jenkins in 3rd, the Bears had the advantage in the early stages. After a shared heat 4 won by a fast starting Danny King, Jordan Jenkins marked his return to Redcar colours with a superb win over Lawson, and with Gilkes 3rd, Redcar doubled their lead to 4 on home shale. 

Ben Cook took Poole’s second chequered flag in heat 7 as he passed Edwards for the win, but with Hagon last, Poole could not reduce the deficit. After a pair of shared heats won by Edwards and Ben Cook, Redcar extended their advantage to six points as Charles Wright won heat 10 after a nip and tuck battle with Poole’s Tom Brennan on the opening lap, and with Edwards getting the better of Zach Cook, Redcar had a cushion at the ECCO Arena. 

Confusion reigned before the start of heat 11 as it was initially announced that Ben Cook would come out as a tactical substitute in place of Richard Lawson. However, Poole team boss Gary Havelock remarkably opted to change his mind with Tobias Thomsen now back in the race after all! Lawson took another win, and with Thomsen passing Trigger, Poole looked set to reduce the arrears until Thomsen suffered an engine failure on lap 3 which gave Trigger 3rd to ensure Redcar remained 6 ahead. 

Havelock then chose to play his tactical in heat 12 with Ben Cook joining Brennan in a bid to hit back and the Pirates did just that as they stormed from the gate to send the Poole fans on bend 2 wild as they found themselves within 2 of Redcar. Poole then hit the front for the first time in 12 heats as Lawson and Ben Cook outgated King and Wright for the maximum heat win, and the visitors had the all important momentum. 

Poole then gated on another 5-1 in heat 14, but Jenkins made an important pass on Hagon, but with Zach Cook taking the win, the Pirates had a 4 point lead heading into the final race. Heat 15 saw the blockbuster pairing of Ben Cook and Lawson take another 5-1 to give the visitors the win, and put Redcar’s play-off hopes in jeopardy.

Redcar boss Gavin Parr has urged his in-form “Agilia” Bears side to “keep rising to the challenge” as Redcar go in search of another aggregate point success in their quest for the play-offs tomorrow night against Poole. The Cab Direct Championship clash promises to be a thriller with tapes up at 7:30 at the ECCO Arena. 

The former cycle speedway man has urged the side to keep rising to the challenge ahead of the visit of Poole, “ The boys just have to keep rising to the challenge and the next test we have is Poole. Each battling performance breeds more and more confidence which can only be a good thing as the business end of the season approaches.”

The passionate team boss has been extremely pleased with the atmosphere around the side in recent times, “ The atmosphere around the pits since Dan (Gilkes) signed for us has been immense. We are together as a team, they are battling as one and this has shown on track.”

Despite Redcar’s recent good form, Parr is taking things one meeting at a time, “ At the moment, we are just taking things one meeting at a time. We know how well Poole ride the ECCO Arena, especially the Cook brothers, however, we are on a bit of a roll at the moment so we are hoping to keep that good run going.”

Parr is under no illusions that tomorrow’s match is another must win fixture, “ Poole is another must win match but we have said that for the last few matches and we have managed to come out on top. We did brilliantly to come back against Edinburgh and win when we looked dead and buried but the boys are under no illusions that Poole will be a stern test.”

As reported earlier this week, Connor Bailey has decided to take a break from speedway, with Parr wishing “The Tornado” all the best as he fights mental exhaustion, “ I would love to see Connor back in the future. We are 100% behind Connor and we wish him all the very best. We would love to see him back at Redcar spectating before the end of 2024.”

Parr also explained why Redcar must run with guests or rider replacement for the rest of the season, “ As we have completed 75% of our matches, we were informed by the powers that be that we cannot sign a rider so we must use a guest or run with rider replacement for the remainder of 2024.”

The Bears will be again looking towards their two former British Champions in Charles Wright and Danny King to lead from the front. The club have called on a former Bear, Jordan Jenkins to guest in place of Connor Bailey. Jenkins will line up at number 4 alongside Dan Gilkes with Jason Edwards moving into the number 2 berth for tomorrow’s match. 

The Pirates track a full strength 1-7 with ex-Bear Richard Lawson sure to prove stern opposition for Redcar. The all-action Vinnie Foord lines up at reserve for the current league leaders after he made a successful return from injury in Poole’s big win over Plymouth last night.

The Edinburgh Monarchs Academy took their first win of the season with a 52-37 victory over a battling Middlesbrough “Heat Floors” Tigers side at Armadale. Connor Coles was the difference maker for the hosts with a stunning maximum whilst Jake Mulford hit 10 for the Tigers.

Despite the impressive win for the hosts they had to do it without Sam McGurk who broke down on his way to the meeting with rider replacement covering his outings. The Middlesbrough management could also point to the fact that Ben Trigger missing the meeting had an impact on the side’s chances. 

The meeting started in the worst possible way for the Tigers with Connor Coles winning his first race of the match, and with Mason Watson 2nd after Mulford suffered mechanical problems, Edinburgh had a 4 point lead. The second race saw further problems for the Tigers as both Ben Rathbone and Will Hocaniuk fell to gift the Academy a 5-0 heat win and a 10-1 advantage after just 2 races!

Heat 3 saw a much needed 5-1 heat advantage for Middlesbrough as Jamie Halder gated and took the win, and with Danny Phillips passing Dayle Wood on lap 3 to take 2nd, the Tigers reduced the deficit to 5 points.

Max Perry passed the impressive Will Hocaniuk and the Middlesbrough guest, Matt Marson to win heat 4, but with Kyran Lyden at the rear, Edinburgh could not extend their advantage. Jake Mulford registered Middlesbrough’s 2nd heat win of the night, but with Kai Ward falling whilst in 4th, the Tigers were still 5 behind in Scotland. 

After a trio of shared heats won by Coles, Perry and Watson respectively to maintain Edinburgh’s 5 point advantage, the Monarchs hit a vital 5-1 in heat nine to give them a 9 point cushion at Armadale. Dayle Wood took the win, and with Perry passing Marson for 2nd, Middlesbrough had a mountain to climb in their quest for an away win. 

Heat 10 saw another big blow for the Tigers as Coles and Watson hit another 5-1 to give Edinburgh a 13 point advantage in their quest for an opening win of the season. Mulford stopped the rot for Middlesbrough with his 2nd heat win, and with Ward getting the better of Lyden, the Tigers had a much needed heat advantage to reduce the arrears to 11 points on away shale. 

However, the Monarchs re-established their 13 point lead thanks to a 4-2 in heat 13 as Coles gated well to hold off Mulford, and with Perry getting the better of Marson, the Monarchs wrapped up their first 2 WRSA league points of the campaign. 

After a shared heat 14 won by Edinburgh’s Wood, the final race of the night saw an epic battle between Coles and the Middlesbrough pairing of Mulford and Phillips. Coles took the lead from the gate, only to be passed superbly by Phillips on the outside. However, Coles was not to be denied his maximum as he passed the Middlesbrough skipper at the end of lap 2 to take a well deserved maximum in a 52-37 success for the Monarchs academy.

Today’s home match against the Edinburgh Monarchs Academy has been postponed.

The ECCO Arena track is already very wet from the recent heavy rain, and with more rain forecast, the promotion have decided to postpone the match.

Middlesbrough Tigers starlet, Ben Rathbone has urged his side to “get the job done” and pick up the “Heat Floors” Tigers first away win of the season when Middlesbrough travel north this evening to take on the Edinburgh Monarchs Academy with tapes up at 7:30 at Armadale Stadium. 

Rathbone, who achieved a lifelong dream by representing the Tigers said, “ We have faced some good teams away from home and on the whole I think we have performed well. We haven’t had much luck away from home but you can make your own luck! Tonight is a really good opportunity to get our first away win of 2024.”

Personally, Rathbone believes tonight will be a valuable learning experience, “ I have not done many laps around Edinburgh so it will be good to get another meeting under my belt around Armadale.”

Rathbone, who hit a stunning 9 points from reserve against Sheffield, is hoping to continue scoring big points, “ I’m hoping to keep scoring good points so I can move up from reserve and into the main body. I think I could have done even better if I hadn’t made a couple of silly mistakes so I’m hoping to learn from them and improve on them this weekend, starting tonight.”

The local lad reserved special praise for Middlesbrough’s Jake Mulford, with Rathbone happy with the help he’s received from the Bears reserve, “ Jake is a little bit younger than me but I have a really good relationship with him, we spend a lot of time talking about set-ups which has been helpful. The knowledge he is gaining from the likes of Charles Wright and Danny King filters down into the Tigers team which can only be a good thing for me and the rest of the boys.”

Rathbone, who grew up watching speedway on Teesside, has been happy with the support the side has received from the fans, “ The level of support we have received has been superb! Sometimes people can be cynical about 3rd tier racing but as we have shown the fans, the racing can be just as good!”

The Tigers are forced into a change to their 1-7 due to their number 5, Ben Trigger, away racing in Poland. The Tigers promotion have drafted in ex Edinburgh man, Matt Marson to guest. The Tigers skipper, Danny Phillips, who rode 29 meetings as a home rider for Edinburgh across 2022 and 2023 will be looking to lead his side to victory against his former employers.
